Studs on main case that holds transmission is loose

Post by daneobigdog »

I have a 914 one of the many items I am working on is replacing the clutch. When I removed the transmission I found that one of the studs that is inserted into the case is loose.

I am wondering if anybody else has run into this problem and if there is a easy fix such as having drilled out oversize by a machine shop and have a insert installed?

Thanks Dane

Hi Dane, and welcome to STF

The stud is loose how ? Is it screwed all the way in and is it still able to be wobbled by hand ?

Double nut it, to remove it, and see if any of hole threads come out with the stud ? Then inspect the hole & threads. If they look ok, you can try screwing the stud back in and see if goes in farter than it was originally, and tightens up ?

I have not seen this as a problem, I have come across some that have been loose, from being removed but not installed all the way back in when re-installed.

If threads do come out when you remove the stud, and the hole and the rest of the threads look questionable, then yes you can have it inserted, or it might be easier to heli-coil it.

Hi Richard thanks for your help. I am fairly new to all this stuff and it takes me a while to figure stuff out.

Maybe you can help me out with another question I have. I bought a parts car which I took out a 2l motor which is seized. I live in the North East and can't find any machine shops locally that could rebuild crank and my 2 liter heads, piston rods, cam etc. I am not looking to build a race motor but rather go back close to stock and I will add dual carbs. Can you give me any recommendations on shops to approach? I can always ship stuff UPS.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Dane

Even doing the assembly your self, it may be hard to keep in that budget, especially with shipping too & from, and will also depend on the condition of the existing parts, if they can be re-done or have to be replaced ?

You say the motor is sized, more than likely water has gotten in one or more of the cyl's hopefully, and that would mean the bottom end should still be in good shape ? If no water than it could possibly have been a valve let go, or something in the bottom end. Untill you get it apart, it's up in the air the reason it's seized.

But if your not in to much of a hurry, wait and watch for deals, savings will be well worth it. And I can do the same, I come across stuff all the time, but pass since I have no need of them.

For machine work I get mine mostly done at www.europeanmotorworks.com they are reasonable on prices here in So CA. There are others, Riddle Machine Co a little pricey, also here in So CA, on your side of the country there is http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/store/home.php, also a bit pricey.
