3 heaters in my car?

Post by bradey bunch »

Hi! I have a '73 412, and I just bought a '71 411 for parts. The '73 had its gas heater removed by the last owner, who also installed some type 2 heater boxes. The parts car, the '71, has the normal type 4 gas heater under the car, over the tranny, as well as normal heater boxes, but also has something heater related in the trunk. It has hoses going into the front drivers wheel well, as well as each side of the trunks "firewall". There is also a second control knob that has the heater sign on it in the dash, on the right side of the steering wheel, on the padded part of the dash. I will try to get some pics soon, but if anyone has any info on this, it would be great. I am wondering if it is a booster heater for antarctica (or canada, where I am), or some sort of AC system...

Thanks.

Ah, thanks Albert! I looked in a superbeetle today, and it looks to be a very similar model. Is it possible to install only the normal type 4 gas heater in my '73? What is compatible? Thanks!

The normal gas heaters for 411 and 412 ...all models...are interchangeable. If you look hard...I'm betting that you find the mounting studs...and at least the stamped indentations for the cover lids for glow plug and coil in teh back.
It was common in 411/412's...that the bodies were prepped in the assembly line for most optuions even if teh car did not get one. For example.....in all models...you will notice the body stampings in the front trunk....ready for the cut-out for power brake booster linkage. Also....all of the holes, threadings and attachments are in each and every chassis....to go from manual to automatic tranmission. Its a bolt up proposition either way. You will also find the stampings on both sides for cut-outs to install either right or left handd drive.

I think some of the later wagon variants may not have had the access ports for the glow plug and coils for the standard rear mounted gas furnace. If t has teh stampings...if its a two or four dooor saloon....just takes teh lids and screws from the donor...and carefully cut out the stamping indentions.
Get all of the parts. Pumps, mountings in heater channel for temp switch, heater unit and blower, fuel line accumulator, exhaust pipe, auxiliary blower and all trunkings and mounts.....and the harness....all lever switches and the timer behind the dash....and its harness. Ray
