914/4, what to look at before buying?

Post by Lars S »

Going to look at a -72 914/4 project car tonight, what is most imortant to look at besides rust?
Can some of the gearbox issues be discovered without driving the car?
Can I still get a new windshield if neccesary?
Any other strategic part unavailable...?

Welcome to the 914 forum, congrats on the purchase!

pics!!!

The list is long, main concern is that the repairs were done properly.

You also probably want to replace all the fuel lines (including the ones in the tunnel) and brake flex lines if it hasn't been done recently, as well as flush the brake fluid.

You should really flush brake fluid at least annually, but no one ever does... leading cause of having to replace brake parts.

Thanks Piledriver!

Just had to buy her or not last night, (glad I did), she's been sitting welded and primed indoors for 22years, the owner did not manage to re-fit the ripped out wiring harness. She has done 13000km.

Pictures are from 1987 before and during resto. Pictures from now will come when I have picked her up.

The windshield looks OK but are there new ones available?

Thanks piledriver!

Looking at the top picture above, what colour code do you guess the car has been painted in?

I think that's the "sand it down to the original paint" color

Seriously, if IS in good shape, an auto paint specialist shop can scan in a small sample off a small part like the bits in front of or a headlamp cover.

From here it could be Krylon paintbomb red or perfect Guards Red in OEM paint... can't tell.

Yes thats one alternative and that code should be Saturn Yellow (Saturngelb) L13M the other strongly supported by the government (my wife!) is to keep it in the same red and my wonder is ift it possibly can be the Bahia Red (Bahiarot) L30E ?
