Symptoms of fuel pump about to go?

Post by raykinsella »

Does the pump just stop working, or does it act up a bit on its way out? My 412 has a six year-old rebuilt pump, but the other day I was just driving along, engine purring like a kitten, when all of a sudden it just died. I was able to coast the car back into a driveway. I cranked away with the starter; the engine might give a little nudge to life and then pressing on the gas pedal it died again. As if starved for gas. After about ten minutes of this it suddenly started up right up, and I drove home, nervously, about three miles. I had a look at the fuel filter, and at least on the outside it looked old and dirty. So I changed it, and when the old one was out I cut it open to see what the inside looked like - VERY dirty. The car has not stalled like that since, but I don't know if the filter solved it or perhaps my pump may be starting to go. A stall like that has NEVER happened before.

It usually gets noisey first. What you have sounds like a clogged sock filter in the tank. There is a mesh prefilter that gets clogged with silt.
Drain the gas, and remove the fuel lines . Remove the big nut aroung the fuel lines. the two tubes and sock filter pulls out. It only goes back in one way. Cut the sock filter loose. You don't need it. Ray
