Finally!

Post by bradey bunch »

My car is finally driveable again! I have some questions and feedback. First, there are two white small wires left loose under the hood. the numbers on them are 18, and 3A (or 34, hard to read) and they are on the same connector. The car runs ok, but runs rough before it warms up. Im not sure if that is because it was sitting though. Does someone have a good diagram of all the fine electrical connections under the hood? I cant find any with corresponding numbers anywhere. Also, I got the flywheel machined an extra 0.040" where the bus pressure plate bolts up. It works good. I also used 2 different slaves to get one good one. I am interested to see how long it holds up. Oh.. and there was a small wire that hooked up to the bottom of the old tranny, but it dosent have a place on the new tranny (4 speed). What is it for? The car is a 1973 412 wagon.

Thanks, Braden

I don't know but the ECU number 18 is listed as starter motor(terminal 50)?? There is a back up light switch on the tranny... I'll have to look to see if it is a two or single spade? I though I had a two term. switch? Sorry but I can't find the chart on the white wires? What kind of connector is the two wires or are they two female spade term.? http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html Here is a wiring chart link... Bill,jr.
p.s. Did you change from a auto to a manual tranny? Also, is your car a Ljet or Djet?
Also, Brad has a lot of Djet Injection info here...

The back-up light should have two wires. One goes to the coil...or at least to teh loom where the coil wires come out (going from memory here). The other is a ground. The positive for the back-up light switch should have its own fuse that is usually found laying in teh bundle of wires near cylinder #4. The other single wire is usually for the deceleration valve on the auto tranny. It will not have a place when using the four speed. You should be using a vacuum powered decel valve with the four speed.

There are no letter coded wires. It will be 18 and 34. I'll look at the diagrams at lunch. Ray

Hmmm. Well I went from manual tranny to manual tranny, a '71 box into a '73. It is not the back up wire, as that connects near the top of the tranny. It is a single female spade connector at the front of the tranny, with a small rubber boot covering it. The white wires on the other hand are connected to the same connector, a female as well.

Thanks for the help,

Braden

Did the car originally come with an automatic? If you are not sure....look at your gas pedal. If it has a button about 2" long and 1/2" wide underneath it.....that is the kick-down solenoid.
If it was originally a manual and has no kick down switch under the pedal.....it will have no solenoid wire and no deceleration valve wire....and that means that the black wire is most probably the neutral safety switch as you thought. Not all transmissions had a drilling for a neutral safety switch. That switch would be mounted in the tail cone casting of the tranny...on the bottom. Ray

Its deffenitley an original 4 speed. Its from canada, where that was an option. It sounds like its the neutral safety switch, although it didnt work on the last transmission. Whats really scaring me are the two white wires though. I dont want to run it with the wrong sensors hooked up to the wrong wires.

Hold it wait....where are these two white wires? I thought all of this was down underneath for some reason. The Fuel injection wires are all totally seperate from chassis wires. There are actually no sensor wires that can be hooked up wrong. They are all unique. MPS...4 pin. Dizzy...3 pin. TPS 4 or 5 pin but it won't reach the MPS. Intake air sensor two pin and won't reach injectors. Injectors are in left to right pairs with white covers for 1 and 3 and black for 2 and 4.
There are a few wires that run along the rear apron that are respectively for coil, oil pressure and heater fan.

Other things that can come loose while working under the car include the two wires that go to the heater thermostat in the channel, the fuel pump wires for the heater and the coil or glow plug wires.

Oh...wait...are you sure its not "24" and 18? Because....on 1973 models terminal 18 from the fuel injection harness goes to the wire loom for the cold start injector and....terminal 24 goes to the starter terminal 30/50. Is it a two wire female plug that is the same style of plug as the injectors are?

HA!!!!!...I found it! It is the late model auxiliary air regulator plug! For some reason your car must have originally had L-jet. That powers its Auxiliary air regulator with #34 from teh ECU plug and a wire from the double relay.
It could also be 24 and 18 using a late model AAR with D-jet. What month was your car produced in? Also does it have aluminum bumpers with gas shocks mounting them? Ray

The car originally had steel chrome bumpers (although I installed some aluminum ones...) and its 8th month of 73. It seems to be a cross of 73 and 74. for example, it has the late style gas tank and sending unit/gauge, but it is D-jet, which I am 90% sure is original.

The wires came off of something, I just cant remember what. the two wires I am talkfing about go to the SAME connector, therefore they are connected to each other, but they should plug on to something. Wires that look similar include the 3 ground wires just under the plenum. They are pretty fine wires. By the way, the car now runs fine, but can be a bit hard to start.

Yes..I have found that as well. The crossover months from 72 to 73 and 73 to 74 have some oddities about them. So these two wires are they in a plastic plug...or just crimped together into one female type terminal....or are they not in a plug and two seperate terminals?

Also...where are they coming out of....what area of the compartment...and how far do they reach? Ray

They are crimped in a singular, reaguar, non insulated female plug. they are coming out of the ecu wiring harness, and reach about the end of the air cleaner (the end near the back of the car). I know they are coming out of the ecu's harness, but I dont have the car here to check what wires they are bound to.

There is a two in one connector that is near the left side on my sedan the goes to the fuel pump relay. There is a connector that goes under the throttle body and come from the service plug and goes into a black plug connector in between. Can you send a pic? I dont see any thing on the right side near the aircleaner?? What part of the engine harness does it come out of? Sorry no help. Ray will find it for you!! Bill,jr.

Thanks everyone! I looked at the starter, and the disconnected cable, and it is the perfect length to reach the starter. I just had to thread it the other way. It all makes sense now, as my friend disconnected the starter, but I hooked it back up, and did not think of putting the white wires under the car. Does anyone know what those 2 wires are for anyways? What purpose do they serve? The car seemed to run fine without them...

Thanks again,

Braden

If the numbers are correct they should be feeding the cold start valve. I believe they go to the starter to make sure that the cold start valve has continuation of power while you are cranking.

And that would explain the bad starting!
