I've got a Lincoln Pro-Mig 140 w/ gas that I'm quite happy with. I'm still a rookie welder and hadn't thought of using smaller wire for less heat, nor the penny/magnet trick. I have been using a flattened on one end piece of copper tubing with a bicycle grip on the other (for insulation) to back up small holes. Works well, except for when I can't reach behind the panel. The .023 wire and penny/magnet tip are appreciated !

Two tips with the penny, first check the date. Today's pennies are not copper, but zinc with copper plating. If you get one from the 80s or earlier, it will be solid copper. I also grind down one side so it's blank and smooth. That way it sits nice and flush with your panel.

Placing copper on the backside does help, but it isn't necessary. If you are good with the MIG machine you can easily weld the trim holes closed without access to the backside.
