DO NOT leave out the bevel washer. Leaving it out leaves too much gap between the "C" clip and joint face. The in out movement causes wear of the "C" clip groove. The C-clip pops out.....it begins wearing the splines. Been there and done that.
It is suppose to be difficult to get the clip back in. Its pushing against spring tension. Ray

The circlip is easy to install with the washer in place. Install the circlip so that it fits on the splines and then use a large socket and a hammer to set it in place. Just takes a couple of seconds. It is harder to remove the circlip with the washer installed, but doing the reinstall is a breeze.

Thats how I figured out to do it also. I have a crappy socket that I have ground a little on the inside so as not to ding the splines. Ray
