Gosh, You're not just doing this to satisfy my curiosity are you? Or is this something you're actually interested in knowing about?

Interesting idea. What is the size of the pin on the 914 ball joint? If it's 15mm, it almost looks like the 914 strut, flipped side to side, would bolt right in if using the stamped 1303 control arms. Eyeballing it, in the most inexact way (i.e. looking at pictures), it really doesn't look far off as far as scrub radius goes.

I have two '74 1303s I'm working on. One is getting 944 brakes all the way around (with M calipers on the front), the other is getting 914 brakes on the front, but using EARLY 924 spindles. I would have simply used 1303 disc brake spindles if they could be found anywhere in the world for less than what I'd get for selling one of my children.

I toyed with the idea of simply using 924 brakes, as is, but my son wasn't having the Audi wheels I was trying to convince him to use. That said, I do not what to hijack this thread, so I'll save any further comments for my own thread, another time.

I hope the 914 strut idea works out. Would love to have more options for Super Beetle owners.

I have a spare 914 and an early 911 front end I was considering grafting in some form, possibly double wishbone and shocks (adding an upper arm, cutting down some struts as spindles), so if there is a simpler way I'd try it.
We have a dead front clip on a pan from a 71 to play with.

Unfortunately the weather hasn't been cooperative lately, I'm working outside.
Today I'd have to sprout gills and flippers to get anything done.

Early 911 parts (non-M caliper struts etc) are ~as cheap as 914 parts, and have better wheel options.
IMHO the optimal calipers to adapt would be Wilwood Superlight "internals".

They require a simple adapter anyway, so M/non-M struts is not an issue.

A potential issue with the 914/911 setup is the lack of a speedo drive hole, those cars used a drive cable from the transmission.

The early 944 setup I have has the speedo drive hole etc, looks like a pretty easy swap if you don't mind making or buying wider fenders. (looking for late 944 arm setup to clear the 18x11 996TT rears. the 8" fronts will clear)
