There is no VW machine shop (besides my dad) closer to me than Rocky in ww washington (400 miles away).
If you don't get it bored and honed to spec by someone who has the right gear, it's not worth bothering with.
(shortening etc is a different matter, a decent lathe is all that is needed)

OTOH, many motorcycle jugs get regularly bored/honed somewhere, and more than a few have ~4" bores.

There are probably a ~dozen big bore T4 cylinder torque plate setups in existence, but I have a feeling with those jugs, simply round & straight would likely be sufficient.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The guy will do it if I bring him torque plates......I checked into it and the alu to make the torque plates is $65.

THEN the would have to be bored and hoined to exact size. I'm running into a whole lot of expenditures for jsut one set...

You could use an old worn out case half as the "base" for your torque plate. The top plate who knows? Machinists often don't like to share their secrets since they are so hard earned.

Since you're making everything else, couldn't you make a boring bar?

BTW, are torque plates really needed?

I can see them on an engine block where the metal all around the cyl. are pulled by head studs but the air cooled cyl. isn't holding any force from the head studs. It's sandwiched in between the head and the block and is under compression that is spread out.

I think that if I were doing the boring I'd leave the cyls. long and manufacture something to hold the end by the tailstock steady. Maybe a 4"+ bearing of some sort that surrounded the cyl? Trim the cyl. to length after finish.

My lathe isn't big enough to handle the cyls with a torque plate bolted on...
:(
Somebody had posted pics of these cyls under a plate and being spun.
THAT lathe was a monster!

You mean like this? That is a Big A$$ lathe!

The only thing I don't like about this jigging is the bore plates are pressing not on the top of the cyl like a head would be when torqued, but on the top cooling fin. Am I missing something?

These were never intended as Torque Plates, just something he rigged to dampen vibration during machining.

Why would one need torque plates when there is no pull on the cyl. sides? All the head clamping forces are transfered to the crankcase. No bolts or studs pull on any part of the cyl. causing it to distort. The cylinder is just compressed between the head and the case ........

ALL VW shops use torque plates to hone cyls. Check out the video on Youtube
I forget the name of the shop that has a lot of machining vids there.

Where did you get the PTP CNC plates? Old ones from Jake? You want to wait until you have the plates before you finish the cylinder trimming.
