Well, I'm Tom, (duh, like my user name here) and have been playing with ac vws since the early '60s. There is a lot of what I do on my web site so I won't repeat too much.
I'm just collecting a few more parts and will be doing a minor reconfig on my notch power plant ( VW Trends April, 03 feature car) sometime in the next year or so.
My current project is a split window rat rod with a somewhat interesting engine loosely based on the T1 platform. I think the only real t1 part is the dizzy drive though!
I like to play with all aspects of the aircooled platform so I guess I may be one of the more diverse guys hanging here. I guess I've "been there, seen that", on a lot of trends, and I feel the T4 one is a good one. Lots of good folks, lots of good stuff happening so it must be a good thang.
Kevin, maybe we should run into one another a bit more?

If so, sorry I was always on your butt, the Lieutenant really stayed on us hard!!
Very, Very small world. If you remember that Ghia that sat in the parking lot, you'd love to see it now.....6 year resto and absolute perfection! I tried PMing you, but the system would not let me.

Sean,35 and im a construction contractor by day, certified welder, fabricator, etc... degree in business manegment, I went to an engineering school so my hobby is arguing about how things work with engineers who have never cracked open an engine or machine to see how it actually works. I used to help them with thier rides and ICE homework and they would help me with my Math. My heart is in motors and cars but it turns out i can make better money in construction to support my addiction. Ive also been mayor of the small ohio town i live in for the lat 6 years. Born and raised within 8 miles of where i live.
I got the vw bug at 12 when my neighbor built his first rail. Built my first baja 4 years later with a lot of help from ny neihbor and we have been building vws ever since. rails, drag cars, street bugs whatever. I sold out all my stuff a year or so ago and bought a tube chassis manx clone to build a lightweight street, drag and sand car.
I just started the second build of the 66x102 motor for this car and hope to finally finish it this winter. I got distracted last year after a couple parts failures during the dyno tests but now im ready to get back at it. I started assembling the bottom end last night. Everything is finally here and ready to assemble again then Jake starts tempting me to change out my Fat shroud setup, thats how i ended up with the 102's,f-prod cam......
My projects get drug out a while cause im into to many things, I build and fly R/C planes with my boys, race a little solo II with the 77 T/A, try to find some time to make a few road trips on the HD and a few trips to silver lake in the summer and the drag strip a few times a year.

Hi everybody. My name's Scott. I spent the first 8 1/ 2yrs outta high school in the Navy. AT (electronics Tech) on F-14's, hence the avatar! I started w/ VW's when I was 14. Got a project baja from my older brother. I ended up fixing up another parts car and driving it till 'bout 3 yrs ago, I'm 31 now by the way.
I've had a partly done '60 bug that's been screaming for my help for 3 yrs now. I finally got my garage built last year, and after I get my welder for Christmas....LOOK OUT !!
I've got a '74 914 1.7 motor that's sitting in the corner waiting for the bug to get finished. I've been lurking around here for a few years now soaking up as much info as I can.
I've got to say that I've never been involved in another hobby that the people involved help each other out so much. Gotta Love this place !!

Hi my name is Tim, and I am a lurker....
I joined this board back when it was brand new. I got into VW's and type IV's within weeks, having been laid up with a knee injury and looking for a new, low-impact hobby. for several months I was planning a project, something old small and sporty, a datsun roadster, tr6, or similar. Then I decided that it would be fun to have a dual purpose street and offroad car to tinker with. So I picked the manx. One of the reasons I wanted one was because they were so light. Hundreds of horsepower mean nothing when you're driving a tank. But a hundred horsepower in a golfcart can be quite fun.
Within three weeks of buying the manx I picked up an almost running 914 for 300$. On the assumption that the engine would somehow shoehorn in. But still not a bad investment for 300. I immediately started web searches and came upon Tuna's type 4 website. I emailed him soon after that asking about a way to make it happen. I owe a lot to tom, he really helped me out when I was just getting started, letting me know the good shops and what parts I needed.
Since the 1.8 I put into it was worn out, I built a 2.0L two years ago, with a big webcam and a couple of goodies. Now that I've got the engine sorted out I have a need for a new chassis w/ long travel suspension and new shroud/exhaust. It comes along little at a time and I do most all of the work myself.
I was at cal poly SLO matertials engineering for a few years, but have since moved to Tucson for grad school, biomedical engineering.
still love to drive the car and find it more fun to drive than my TT coupe.
Thanks to tuna and all the members of this board, It has been my greatest resource for all those questions that the books can't answer.

My name is Hal, I'm 28 and currently in the middle of moving .. so I guess technically I'm "homeless". I grew up in Santa Rosa, and should finish moving and be settled in Portland, OR by the end of December.
I've been lurking here for a couple of years, soaking up everything I can and planning to do an eventual T4 conversion on my '70 T3 Fastback. Then the 1600 died in August and the whole timetable got changed. I picked up a 1.7L Bus engine a few months ago that's probably a decent runner (turns over, seems to have good compression) .. it'll either be put straight into the car or used as the foundation for something bigger, not sure yet.
Anyway .. from reading everyone else's intro on here I'm rather boring by comparison; barely graduated high school (I was so *bored* I didn't put out much effort), didn't go into the service, don't have anything resembling a career (does "tinkerer" count?), and while I spent a few years at the local J.C. studying Journalism I didn't get any kind of degree or anything... I'm planning to go back to school after settling-in from moving and go into edumakashun ..

roll call
My name is Steve, and am a longtime LURKER from Santa Cruz, CA. Age 35, Network Engineer.
I always lurk, cause, hey, what could I add to all of this? (I like to flame when people get too cozy about their Hondas, though...)
Have been into anything that could be taken apart since before i can remember.
Had a minibike with a chainsaw engine, and well, it went from there.
Dad was always into British cars/bikes. I credit him for getting me into it all.
Have several years experience as Mechanic, Machinist and even built Harley choppers for a living.
Computers can fit gearheads well. Same type of troubleshooting/reason and personality type.
Currently drive a 2003 Jetta, and have a (THE) 76 bus and stockish 73 Thing on the road.
There is an oval on IRS in the works.. Someday type 4.
And a Powerstroke for the bus, someday....
I cannot tell you all how much this forum has helped me in my seemingly impossible task of keeping my T4 on the road.
For several years i had been the ONLY one trying to run the T4. "Normal" VW types heckled.. Valve seats dropped... Mark Stephens...
I could go on and on about my four engine rebuilds in only 35,000 miles...
Finding this site has been like finally breathing fresh air after being cooped for years!
Now have oil leaks (almost) under control, .1% more compression, dynamic balance, real German cam and lifters etc.. etc.. all from this forum, and man, does this last motor sing!
I never knew they had so much power! Even in stock tune...
I'm getting all salty now, but know that there are lurkers out here reading and learning.
I have read every post for at least three years, and thank you all for your help. Couldn't have done it without ya!

More thread stepping, so I'll try to make memory lane quick.....project73gl wrote:Sgt sherrifs..from where/when/what did he look like..i knew a sgt sherrifs back in the day
Sgt Sherrifs was the Production Control desk b*tch at MALS-16 GSE from about '90 to '92 or so. He was the one that the "O" level squadron GSE reps had to deal with to get their GSE gear. Medium height, white dude, high and tight, and an attitude he was God's gift to the Corps. My squadron, HMH-363 used more gear than anyone, we had the oldest CH-53's on the base, and we broke stuff all the time. We managed to spin rod bearings on a JG-75 and even set an NC-10 on fire in Hangar 1. So, since I was the lucky Lance Corporal that got to take the gear back to be fixed, I was the lucky bastard that got to get the speeches and snyde comments about how we shouldn't be breaking the "perfectly fine" 20+ year old equipment in the first place. At that time tugs and light units were still running on MOGAS (sh*t gasoline) and diesel/JP-4 or -5 powered gear was just comming into the fleet.
I hope he's pumping gas for a living somewhere in BFE Nowhere or something......
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....
