New From North Alabama
Nice to be here. A guy from thesamba sent me over.
Recently purchased a 71 super. Shes a fixer upper like most of them are nowadays. I havent owned a vw beetle in 14 years or so. This is actually my 3rd one to own. 2 previous ones I didnt know much about vw's or automobiles at the time since I was 15 years old. But Ive come along way since then. I am now a certified ford tech, although I dont work for ford anymore. I have a great understanding of how cars operate. But so far I have found that the air cooled engines are a totally differant creature in so many areas than what I am used to.
I been in the Mustang scene for the last 5 years or so. I guess horsepower and torque is a turn on for me! But I said when I got rid of my last fox body a few months ago I was done with fast cars. But here 2 weeks of owning this 71 super I am already looking at turbos, heads, camshafts etc etc. So I hope to learn the basics and the performance side of the VW aircooled world.
I will try to use the search feature whenever possible. But Im sure I will have alot of questions.

Hello all, LotRat from thesamba sent me the link for here on my quest for more information about my Baja that I still know so little about. A little back story on how I got my 1972 Baja Beetle....
I hated VWs forever but then I drove the 72 Baja my mom's BF just left to sit out back of their house, and I was floored by how much fun it was.
So I realized that only the water cooled ones suck
Nah but seriously, i've owned that bug for almost a year now, and it's been a blast, and i'm amazed at how simple they are.
now I just need to lift it some more and put some non donut sized tired on the front.
pics? SURE.

Hi everyone, I'm Ed from Caledon Ontario (a bit NW of Toronto). I bought a 73 Super Sports Bug in Calgary Alberta last fall, and drove it home the 2000 miles.
Had a 72 Super when I was a kid, had been thinking about getting another one. When I sold one of my cars to guy in Edmonton Alberta last year, it was a good excuse for a road trip, and to look for a solid car in Alberta (little to no road salt used compared to Ontario).
Just east of Winnipeg Manitoba on the way home:

All the photos from the trip here:

cheers

Hey guys, my name is Dan I live in West Seneca, NY a suburb outside of Buffalo. I've been learning a lot from this site.
I've had my 74 Super beetle since 1999 and I has yet to see the road, Its been painted an assembled for for over 5 years just needed wheels and a drop. It started out as a father son project with my Dad, he lost interest and energy and now its more my project.
I am planning a 2.5 turbo subaru motor with a Porsche trans, I've been planning the swap for about 4 years now, LOL. It is going to happen this winter. I am putting the car on the road with the rebuild 1600 next week for the summer then I'll be taking it apart again. Car currently is on 993 reps 17x9 rears(with wider fenders) and 17x7.5 fronts with a disc brake conversion and coilovers from topline. Some pics from last year, its currently in the garage getting a nice wetsand and buff.
I've build a couple fast turbo and all motor hondas and have owned a lot of vws, audis, hondas, and Acuras.
Here's a pic of her with the current daily in front of it.

Hi Guys,
I'm posting this as an intro & tellin' you the reason why I bought an aircooled VW. (posted in the "why did you buy an aircooled vw?" thread)
First off my Name is Steve X. Some call me X-Man... I live in Rhode Island & I'm from Volksrods.com
I was given my dads old Custom Shortened '66 Deluxe Bus. He built it many many years ago, & it sat in the backyard since I can rememebr... I always wanted it, well he finally gave in & let me have it. By the time I got it the Frame was totaly rotted & there isn't a whole lot left of the rest of it either... First thing I wanted to do was lower it & give it a better center of gravity. So, I was looking into swapping the rear suspension to a Bug IRS set-up. I found a '74 Bug with what the owner said was a rebuilt engine & trans. He said it's got only about 2000 miles on it. I thought Score! Well... Not so much! LOL! The problems started when my woman saw the car & I told her it was '74. She was born in '74 & has always wanted a Bug. So, She asked me if she could have it as her own & fix it for her... Well, Me being the loving guy I am, I said "Sure Bunny!" (that's her nick name) Now my "Shorty" project was put on hold for her car, figuring it was going to be a "quick fix"... So, I start in on it & find more & more ROT EVERYWHERE!!! Well, I ended up totaly stripping the car down to the Chassis. Then I stripped the chassis down to the bare spine, replace the pass. side floor. Now it's ready for paint... Man is this thing gettin the best of me! Well, all I can do is finish what I started, right? All I keep thinking is "Man this is going to be a sweet bug when it's done"... But, I always wanted an earlier bug. OH Well! A '74 isn't very desirable either, so, I'm not really going to be able to sell it if she doesn't like it... At least not for nearly what I'm putting into it.
Here's a pic from when I brought it home.

Here's a pic of the Chassis when I removed teh body.

Here's a pic of "the Shorty" where it sat for many years...

& here it is at home after I started stripping some stuff off of it.

Now the Bug is on saw horses & the Chassis is next to it with the new floor in & ready for Master Series, Seam Sealer, Bedliner (on the bottom) & Gloss Black Rustoleum (on top), with sound deadener & Carpet over that. Then it's on to fixing the Rot on the body. Almost the entire 2" of the bottom of the shell is gone! I have to replace the pass. side heater channel, front bulkhead, both rear quarters under the "moon vents", & the nose. I already replaced the nose with a nose from another bug I got from a guy on the volksrods site.

So, that's how I got into air cooled VW's. I see there are some other guys here from Volksrods as well... Lots of info on this site!
