Don,
I'm just a young pup at 31. I took AVA in Millington in '91. Was stationed w/ VF-102 in Oceana / USS America from 91-96.
Hey, speaking of the mighty Battle PHROG, Not only do I have a little Bro that's a crew chief down in Norfolk (HC-8), but I am also involved in any EMC testing that is still being done on those ancient birds!

...with school, then instructor duty I was in Great Mistakes for over 2.5 YEARS! ...seemed like DECADES!
:-(

At THAT time, the instructors had to march the *boots* to school every morn, so I lived in a boot camp/NTC mentality for that long.

Patrick, 43 (I'm feelin' old), married, 3 kids. BSME from Cal Poly SLO. Spent 4.5 years as a mechanical engineer for the NAVY (civilian) working all things "piping and machinery" for FFG-7 class surface ships. Then spent 5.5 years as a nuclear engineer doing reactor plant testing on SSN-637 class submarines. I've spent the last 10 years working for the Air Force doing project management stuff for advanced telemetry systems. Cheers!

My name is John and I started into VW's in the early 90's with a 74 Standard Beetle .... Drove back from Florida with no heat from March break while in University near Toronto.

Did a major resto on that which lasted 6 years on and off and consumed too much money, then did a manx style dune buggy, 2 Westy Loaf style campers, a 924 and a number of 914's .... and now into a Type three Square sunroof major resto, currently in progress..

I've rebuilt three T1's and only minor T4's, just the simple stuff so far

I try and do everything. Upholstery, assembly, welding, bodywork, except paint. ALthough I think I may try that too some day on my Square daily driver .....

I'm turning 35 soon and have a lovely wife and daughter, who always allow me time to spend on my hobbies of being a keyboardist / bassist and working on the VDubs ..... when I'm not at the cottage .......

Speaking of Barracks

Post by new2bugs »

You Know I spent the September of 95 till February of 96 there at Millington. It was a good time. I called cadence even. I wasn't too bad for a squid. Heheheh!!!

I also spent 5 years working Tomcats In Oceana. First at VF-32 then 2 years at VF-101. Now, I am over here At NAS Lemoore.

And can you believe it there isn't a single Type 4 Conversion on this entire base. Nate was workin gon his over here, but he has since transfered to Whidby Island Washington. Lucky guy. Anyway, Maybe after I get Back From Cruise I will have enough money saved up to work on my own Conversion.

So new2bugs, there is another Tomcat guy here. Well I guess you used to be. Now your a Hornet weenie huh?! Oh well, I know the almighty cat can't live forever ! When did you leave 101 ? I haven't been down to Oceana in a while, but with the Tomcat community getting smaller all the time, I know alot of the old timers!

After lurking around this post for a few days, I figure it's about time to jump in. So here goes...

My name is Mike Mitchell. I'm 37 years old "corporate suit" and live in Indianapolis Indiana with my wife and five year old son. I'm originally from Flint Michigan, one of the industrial armpits of the US thanks to General Motors (remember "Roger and Me"?), and went to college in K'zoo (the forgotten years). We have lived in Indiana for the last 11 years.

I have always had a thing for fast VW's, especially Beetles. I remember cheering for the unassuming little cars as a kid (which was not a popular thing in a GM town, mind you) when they were beating the crap out of most of the American-made iron of that era at the local 1/4 mile drag strip . It's only been over the last five years that my interest in VW's has been rekindled. I've had a handful of both air-cooled and water-cooled models in that time. My current fleet includes a '99 Jetta IV and "Project kaferTEK", my autocross inspired '69 Beetle.

I've been working on a pan-off, ground-up rebuild of the car for five years (the Beetle came home a few weeks after my son). Over the last year I've been picking up the pace and completed the pan, suspension, and drivetrain. Now it on to the body, interior and engine. Future plans include a race-inspired interior, CCC fiberglass fenders, one of Jake's 2-liter TypeIV power plants, and a couple white meatballs with the number "69" on the doors.

I recently learned FrontPage and have started a webpage http://www.kaferTEK.com to track the car's progress. I hope to go "live" by the end of the week.

When I left

Post by new2bugs »

I have been out here for about 2 years now. So I guess I would have to say that It was December 17th or 2001. I was there for 2 years at 101.

I loved it out there I just didn't know it until I got here. Funny how all that works out huh. I put Tomcats down on my JASS request But I was denied. I am going to VFA-25 out here in Lemoore. In fact as of today I am on transfer leave. My family and I will be leaving for Oregon on saturday. Then I am back to the races or Deployment. But this Time I will be doing a WestPac Instead of another MedCruise.

By the Way, I have a 1965 Standard Beetle. Just put a new, 1776 in her for getting around purposes.

Oh how could I forget, I am Working on Wife number 2 and I have three Children. My oldest Is My 5 year old girl and I have two boys that are 2 and 3.

I am in the Navy.
