Ok guys, my 69 beater bay window may need rear wheel bearings, but I'm not sure.
When doing the "do I need wheel bearings test" (the wiggling the wheel laterally and horizontally) I'm not sure what the conclusion is.
When grasping the tire from the sides (left and right) there is no play, but when grasping from the top and bottom, there is about 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch of rock....
Now I know on modern cars, any play = replace, but I know this could be different since I know in the case of the fronts there is supposed to be alittle.
Any ideas?

heh so I had forgotten I had posted this years ago, but it never got resolved, so...
I've jumped back into the bay in the past few weeks and I'm still stumped. Both rear wheels still have play about the horizontal axis (so grabbing at 6 and 12 there is about 1/16" of play, yet none on about the vertical. No grinding and everything moves well, tried repacking everything to no avail.
So I decided to just replace the bearings... well its done, brand new bearings (either German or English, not cheap junk) and its still doing it! The bearings fit snug in the housing and the stub axle is a press fit through both the inner and outer bearings, yet I'm still getting this play from somewhere.... I can see the brake drum and stub axle are the culprits moving, but I can't seem to find a straight answer on whether or not there is supposed to be any play. I wouldn't think so because of the brakes marring the drum, but I'm at a loss as to what is moving....
ideas?
(All spacers are in place, inside long one and the outer one that fits inside the outer seal,, beveled edge out, axle bolt is properly torqued, etc)
