I'm looking information or a website info 914 steering columns year breakdown differences etc
as I have a sample column here in hand and its splined and matches a 60-74½ VW but the horn contacts look to be integrated into the switch like on later model vw's
as we are interested in making a boss kit for 914's to fit the GT style wheels we carry
The columns all look to be eerily similar to the super beetle units at least at the top end. (and early Golf/Rabbit)
I confess I am only familiar w/73-76 models.
Should make for a nice product.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
I believe that the 70-71 columns have different splines, but I cannot verify this.
The 72-76 horn contacts are part of the "horn button", which is isolated from the steering column by a sort of cup-shaped rubber spring. When the button is pressed, the metal on the back makes contact with the metal of the wheel, grounding the wire attached to the button. This completes a circuit through the horn relay, triggering the horn.
The 70-71 cars have a tubular piece that has the contacts in it. When the horn button is pressed, this causes the contacts to close, which I believe provides a direct ground path for the horn itself.
I am much less familiar with the early cars than the later, as you can probably tell...
thanks for the replies guys, I think at this point we are going to have to get some complete used columns with steering wheels to make these boss kits issue free...
any ideas on who would have complete column for sale and what they would go for? I would be interested in selling them back or reselling them after were done as we do not do any 914 restorations at this point
The easiest would be to find someone who is parting a car; the steering shaft is not a high-demand part, so prices should be low--but shipping might be a bit expensive.
Try the classifieds on the Samba site, the Pelican Parts site, and the 914club and 914world sites. You'll find some of those are more active than others...
