914 2.0 motor ?

Post by olivajeep »

Hello.

the guys at the pelican parts forum told me to shoot over hear and see if i can find some more answers. i have a 71 914 with a 74 2.0 ( 4 cyl ) and i want turbo the car. my ? is will the stock internals do the job? if thay can how much is to much what are the limits for the stockers. im keeping the same bore and stroke to keep it simple runing about 8 to 10 psi with an sds efi setup and 7 maby 8to1 compression . some said thay will just replace the bearing with beter ones some say get a new crank and rods some say get forged everything what is the best option. now i know the parts are strong and vw bug guys turbo stock type motors all the time and never have a problem is this the same with the type 4. also is there any thing i should look for or any tips with turboing this motor. also the motor will be fully balanced cant forget to tell you that.

I've never turboed anything, but there are some maniacs that do over in the type !V forum. Read all the stuff this crazy sweed kid is doing with TIV. http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=94781
This may help. Its the same motor, just different options and cars that its going into.

In addition to what you've already read, I do know of a few people who have turbo'd stock 914 engines. Up to about 7 PSI doesn't seem to be a problem on stock internals, even the stock pistons and rod bolts which you have been warned about. Both stock 2.0 and 1.7 engines have been done to my knowledge. None of them lasted too many years boosted, but they did last a while. And they were all well-used engines by the time they got turbo'd.

what i think im going to do is have the crank balanced rods checked go with some arp rod bolts rebush the rods to 22mm for the use of forged type 1 pistons new bearing oil pump and cooler maby have the heads cleaned up not sure am i missing anything. and what cam should i use remember almost stock internals mild street engine. im not trying to run 20 psi and make 900 hp (well that would be cool) but just a nice cam that will work. i have read that for a mild build the stock cam will be fine and what about rocker ratio. is stock fine.
