My new 1971 Transporter!

Post by skubidoobie »

My first VW, I've always wanted a Bus so now I have one! Needs a wee bit of sheet metal work, interior, and some electrical but has a rebuilt motor and is a ton of fun to drive. Any suggestions on where to get preformed sheet metal for this?

Welcome, my brother from another mother.

Take 'er slow and enjoy the scenery. Your conversation skills from now on will be put to the test.

Lots of good info in these pages.

nice bus, I keep thinking a bay would be a nice addition to my driveway, but the wife keeps insisting I get a reliable daily driver first. Whats the interior like? It looks like it may have a Z bed, and some camp stuff (from the vent behind the drivers door). STF is a great place to get advice! Not sure where I'd be without it. Welcome!

So the interior is rough, plenty of work ahead of me there too. I think it does have a Z bed, the guy I got it from says it folds down into a bed but I haven't checked that yet.

I plan on keeping it a Transporter, but will use it for a camper on certain occasions with my girl (I did buy it on Valentine's Day  ).

Hiya skub,

Man, that engine is grungy!

Were it me, I'd shoot that engine with some degreaser and take it on down to the local carwash. Clean most of that gunk outta there. Then, at least, you could see what you get to play with.

Oh, and as long as we are talking about engines, move that gas filter outta the engine compartment. That thing sitting right above the heart of your ignition's electrical distribution point is, as Martha would say, not a good thing. You also might want to consider a Bosch coil on down the road. Think about an SVDA instead of that 009 - it doesn't play well with a 34PICT3.

However, the first thing I'd do is crawl underneath and start checking out the brakes. They are the most critical system on the Bus and they have to work perfectly - every time! Spend your money here and don't accept any compromises.

If you have a working Z-Bed, treasure it. They are much sought after and they are no longer being made. Skub, this is looking like the beginning of a great project. Keep us up-to-date on how you do.

I'm planning on ordering a Bosch coil and new wires, plugs, etc. probably next week. I want to add a real oil filter to my bus, any adapters that you experienced VW pros recommend? Also want to add better oil cooling for the summer time heat, would a deep sump method be good enough or an inline cooler with a fan? Looking at this http://www.vwparts.net/CB1706.html
Thanks guys!

Hiya Skub,

Take the 175 clams you'd spend on that deepsump and use it on the brakes and the fuel system instead. There's logic at work here........think about it this way.........you HAVE to have brakes. You HAVE to have an airtight fuel system. If you don't, your brand new Bus is doomed.

On the other hand, you don't need a new oil cooling system. At least you don't know that you need it now. Drive it a while and see how it performs. The boys at Wolfsburg did a very nice job in designing the cooling (both oil and air) system for the dual port. If it has been properly maintained there is no need for the doodads.

Don't get swayed by what's "cool". Be logical and safe. Besides you'll wind up enjoying your Bus a lot more.

I wish I could give you a answer. Is it a single port or dual?
What are the first two letters on the case under the gen stand?

It's a dual port, but it's not at home right now so I can't tell you what the first two letters are, will look when I head to where I keep it next.
