71 Bay won't start sometimes. Good battery.

Post by sinistervw »

Working on my uncles 71. The thing won't start unless the battery is over charged. I load tested the battery and it tested good. it will hold its charge out of the bus, but when in and hooked up it will get drained.

I am used to bug, so i need a lil help.

Are there possibly anythings that might be common issues that might result in my situation?

Thanks!

It sounds like you have a drain on your battery. Remove the negative terminal from the battery and read the voltage between the terminal and the battery post. It should be close to zero. If not, then pull the fuses one at a time and see if that chances the rate of drawdown. This should narrow down your search. There are several unfused circuits that may give problems. The ignition circuit and the charging system. Removing the wires from the regulator will isolate regulator and the generator. Unfused circuits that someone added like the stereo or an air horn can run your battery down and be hard to find as they aren't wired according to the diagram.

Don't forget to turn off the domelight before you start looking for a draw - in the daylight you could chase your tail for quite a while if it's on (BTDT)

I just want to thank you guys! After spending some time on it tracking everything down with no win... I looked at the keys...there is a alarm remote on it. I took a look and found the alarm. Tested it...Always hot...no fused. I was using the mater jumped between the neg bat cable and neg bat post. Alarm was tapped into the headlight switch power. Meter read 11.8v and the battery was measuring 12.3 . Snip* and 0.2mV the meter now reads!
