You will need to clarify your question. A bus motor, when it was based on the T1 36hp thru the last 1600 cc engine always was an "upright" type of cooling. The t3 motor was based on the 1500-1600 T1 motor but with the "pancake" type cooling system.

However when VW started putting the T4 based motor in, 1700-2000 ccs, they were a "pancake" cooling system similar to the T3 pancake version, but that's as close as they are- just Similar.

So taking a wild guess- If you have an upright 1600 with an external regulated alternator, it *may* be a Ghia style alt. so the Ghia regulator may be what you want.

And yes I should have said it was a pancake motor, it is a 77 motor from a bus. Im puttin it in cause I'm going to pull a trailer with a sandrail with a 1641cc bug motor in it. I had one once before in a sandrail and pulled a trailer with a sandrail on it before. It does a real good job, with a 67 swing axle rear end. he one I had before a single weber Carb, this one Im going to have a twin carb set up out of a bus.
I did foune a voltage reg, for it at Auto Zone. I have had a lot of the bug shops say they don't make them any more, But auto zone have to order it but they can get one in 3 or 4 days.

So I thank you for getting back with me on this anyway.

Welcome to the T4 powered T3 owners group. 8) There are a few of us around.

So all you needed was a bus regulator. The 55 amp alt. should prove to be of surplus capacity unless taxing it with a mega stereo system.

If I read it correctly he thinks he has a type 3 bus engine he wants to put in a bug...

What he really has is a Type 4 bus engine he is going to put in a bug. 77 bus would equal a type 4 engine. no?

Who, sorry to ressurect a long dead thread... But just FYI---

Autozone has the T4 regulators cheap, ~$27.
OReillys has the same part for ~$45 with a lifetime warranty.

Which one is a better deal depends on how good you are about long-term reciept storage.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
