Transmission questions

I just picked up a very nice 62 beetle and am looking at trans mods. The transaxle has a .93 4th and 4.37 ring gear, and I want to give it a little more legs.
Any recommendations? I'm tempted to just change the ring and pinion to a 3.88. I think this would be a good performer and least expensive.
I've got a healthy 1600 pushing the car.

I'd leave it alone.
The 1600 has more umph than the 1200 but it's not worth the trouble IMHO
Pinion bearing retaining method is different in the 3:88 tranny vs. yours.
It takes 3 trannies to build a swing box with a 3:88.

Not if you start with a swing axle that has an AS code. It is a factory swing axle version of the AT single side cover gearbox with a 3.88.
Even if you couldn't find an AS, the 3.88 pinion shaft will slide right into the early pinion bearing, just like any other pinion shaft. So at the most, you only need 2 cores to make a 3.88 swing axle gearbox.
For the original question, I would recommend a 4.12 with stock gears (.89 fourth). A 1600 does not have enough hp to pull a .82.
Are you sure you have a .93 with a 4.37 R&P? VW never combined those gears in any stock gearbox.

Yes VW did make just that combo in type 1 1200cc (swingaxle)1968-1973
and in the 1300cc Superbeetle (IRS) 1972-1974 transmissions. The codes
for the Superbeetle transmissions where I have seen this combo are: AB,
AE. The 1300 cc Superbeetles are very common here in Europe.
CSP's homepage says that the 4,375:1 with 0,93:1 combo are in these
transmissions:AA AB AD AE AG AM AP AX. I'm not sure about this since
their transmission tech section have several errors.

OK Bruce, you can do a lot obscure things with a lot of different trannies.
I don't have any AS code trannies around here I am aware of and I'd rather have a big pinion bearing case over a bolt in.

I'll have to take note of what's inside the AM gearbox I have when I take it apart. One thing I do know is that the .93 fourth gear did not exist before 1973. It was only made as a 002 type gear, and they didn't appear in Beetles until 73.

I have seen 113 style 4ths in 0.931 ratio.
Pretty rare though, most likely pre 1973 1300 cars.

I have seen the 113-.93's also.

a 62 gearbox should have a 0.89 right? 0.93 was introduced in 72 or 73 if i remember correctly.
i had on my 65 the original box 8/35 and 0.89. on 1200 i installed a big bore 85.5 kit and a brazillian 8/31 and the car drives very well.
torquey 1500 pulls very well the gearbox.
sometimes i install also an overdriven judson and the car is even more fun.

Hey Turboblue & Bruce
Sorry to drag up such an old thread.
I am looking to do this exact conversion, building a strong swing axle box and was just wondering what are the 3 boxes you talk about?
I have an AT SSC and an AC swing axle and would like my swing axle to receive the internals of the AT. I can probably get my hands on an AH if needed, and a swing axle super diff for the 8 bolt diff carrier.
What else would i need?
Is it just a matter of swaping the gear carrier (and gear set) from the AT SSC into the AC (or AH) case along with using the earlier AC/AH nose cone for the different mount?
Thanks heaps in advance!
JB

Are you capable of setting up the pinion depth? How about the diff bearing preload? Backlash?
What kind of reverse mechanism does the AC have? The reverse from the AT might not fit your case.
