'67 engine install help... top engine bolts

Post by pkma.perez »

ok, dual kadron, single port, 1600 with dog house shroud. pulled the motor to change the cross shaft, t.o. bearing and clutch. So I've got everything changed and the motor back up and the two lower bolts are in and tightened up. The top two though got pushed back from all the wiggling and pushing. Now, I can just reach the drivers side bolt with a screwdriver and push it back through, but as soon as I start trying to start the nut it slides back in. As for the starter side bolt I can't even see it, let alone reach it. Am I missing an angle here or is there a trick to getting the top two ones back on? Thanks for any help folks.

The starter side bolt just requires patience, and clean threads.
If the top bolts aren't through already, you may need to resupport the engine and loosen up the lowers... I personally always "hang" the top first, and work with gravity.

A ratcheting "box end" wrench is also very handy.

The clutch/doghouse side is a different matter...

VW pressed a nutsert into the case on the doghouse equipped motors.
Those easily come out of scrap cases... and are HIGHLY recommended.

I cannot count the number of cars I have seen running 3 bolts...

Once can also install the fan housing etc AFTER the motor is in, more work, but 100% guaranteed.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Yes, very clean threads help. And....in a pinch, I put just a pinhead droplet of superglue on one corner of the nut after lining it up. with teh hole. It holds the nut the in place just enough to make sure that the bolt can thread in.

On type 4's...its an oposite type of porblem. The half moon bolts have a tendency to push back into the bores. So I use a strong magnet to hold teh right side one to the starter body...the starter I install first via teh bottom nut and stud. The left side I use the bolt with a box end wrench hanging on the other end. Ray

I usually use electrical tape to "fatten" the bolt in the hole so it will not back out. Essentially give a semi compression fit.

I agree with PD that the ratcheting 17mm is a lifesaver!
