hey folks! first off, thank you so much for help you have provided in the past...this forum is great!
i have a problem however. whenever i turn my engine on in my '72 bus, you can hear the transmission (i'm assuming) making a pretty bad grinding noise until you press the clutch pedal. i know this is not good, but i need help figuring out exactly what is broken so that i can fix it. also the transmission will not stay in 4th gear when driving on the highway. do i need a whole new transmission?
thanks so much for any advice and help!

The Transaxle Forum would be a better place to pose this question.
A noise that goes away when you step on the clutch is most likely a bad mainshaft bearing (a part that can be replaced without a complete teardown provided you can get your hands on the specialized puller needed) but the failure to stay in 4th is more ominous - it'll take major surgery to fix that problem.
