Hey folks, would a d-jet motor still run if the dizzy drive shaft was reinstalled one tooth off? Timing mark doesn't come up in the window all things being equal, that is 3500 rpm, hoses off and plugged.
Rebuild under warranty at present, they've never been able to tune it right. Put a light on it today and discovered why.
thnx,
Brad

It would still run, the dist. would just be turned a little more than normal. I had to run one backwards because I put the drive gear in 180deg. off.
TDC shold still come up in the viewing hole though. Thats the same no matter which way the dist. is facing. I would pull the fan off and mark your degree setting with a dremel or marker so you can set the timing.

If it's just your distributor drive being off a tooth or two it is very to reset it, though you should still be able to time it to the original timing marks though even if with the drive in wrong. Set the timing statically close to the zero degree mark and it should be close enough for you to see in the window when you have it revved up.

Re: distributor drive shaft & timing
Depending on how far off the drive is...and add to that...ignition timing setting ....it can run very, very poorly. The injection timing on D-jet is fairly critical in the first place. Its not perfect for any cylinder. Its optimized to be "reasonable" because its fired in pairs. One cylinder is close to spot on, one is not too bad but decidedly off for low speed operations....the other two are way out but still firing on the right side of the inlet cycle. It is worst when teh engine is poorly tuned for fuel mixture and even worse when its improperly timed.
The timing spec....is exacting (27 BTDC at 3500 rpm) not just for advance reasons...but because your injection is triggered relative to cam position ...by the location of the distributor.
Yes....if you are one tooth off you can probably move the distributor body enough to get proper timing with a strobe....but if its off in the wrong direction and you cannot move far enough....fix it right. Its five minutes of work. Ray
