If it helps, the Vanagon (T25 to you, IIRC) Automatic starter is basically the same unit and interchangeable. Might find some in a junkyard.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Just to expand your possibilities, the same starter was used on ALL automatic/autostick VWs (t-1/t-2/t-3/t-4) from '68-7/'81 as well as the '66-'69 & '76 912s, '65-71 911s and '70-'76 914s.

That's cool to know, I thought the throw was longer...

yep it works woohoo!!

ok...........next problem.......

gear selection!

when i press pedal, cable pulls arm underneath box, but arm cant go too far before hitting side of casing...........meaning clutch wont operate.

what im thinking is, pull engine..... and but a 2/4 mm spacer of some sort behind the arm, meaning bearing will be closer to clutch and arm further away from casing underneath......

any ideas>??

you could do that, but have a look at the porsche release bearing. i had this problem years ago with a racing twin plate clutch, i dismantled two bearings and modded the pad to make it deeper for more reach, hope this helps.
Best regards, BBB.

The std 914 clutch/pressure plate/TO setup should just work...unless...

Which 911 throwout setup to you have?
It can be push or pull style...

If it's the later pull style, things are a lot more complicated, you'll need a different Porsche style flywheel and pressure plate.
(Kennedy Engineering makes/sells them)

I'm pretty sure the late trans cannot be converted to the 914 throwout setup, but haven't tried myself.

Did you take pictures?

The starter will be the same either way, at least you have that sorted.

What year 901 ?

The 70 & 71 911 I believe were the only 2 years that had a pull clutch for the 901 style trany, and that trany # was 911/01, which should be stamped on the rib on the bottom of the trany.

I just want to throw in that I do not belive the auto vanagon starter is the same as a auto stick bug. I know a vanagon auto starter will not throw as far as a manual bug starter, and I thought the auto stick starter was same as manual, just w/a self supporting nose.
