Help-Standard or California Engine?

I have a 1974 914 engine, ECxxxxxx serial number. How can I tell if it is the standard compression model or the lower compression "California" version? Short of taking it apart and measureing it of course.

You might be able to use a stick (low tech bore scope) to feel for a dome or dish piston?

Yes...those are the specs....but I think what the genetleman is asking is how to tell without taking the head off if the engine does indeed still have the low compression pistons in it. I have found plenty of EC series engines in junkyards over the years that have been rebuilt into high compression 1.7L engines. The only way to tell for sure is either to use a bore scope to look through the sparkplug hole or pull a head off and look for domed pistons. And....the L-jet only came on 1.8's. You can narrow it down to making sure it is a 1.8 by looking at the head part # in the rocker box. Ray
