i have been searching but new and can't seem to get the answers i'm lookin for or i'm too dumb to realize the answer..
i just bought a 76 bay my first bus and first air cooled. i live in wyoming lots of up and down mountains . the F.I. was bad so the PO put dual stock solexs on it then jetted it down to try and meet utah emissions. wyoming has no such thing. So this thing has no power and refuses to go up hill.!! so i removed the carbs and they are junk .so i went to low bugget ordered new 46 power kit Kadrons and hot power pak ignition 009 dist hei and a new fuel pump i have K&N AIR FILTERS that will fit question is can i remove the heat exchangers for better exhaust flow also. kinda long winded i know any help would be great . Also I am tryin to find somewhere that builds a complete exhaust header for the bay again thanx for all the help

I don't know anything about those carbs, but stock FI is quite nice. Heatexchangers, the early style, 72-74, are the best style, they produce more heat for you, and the heads run cooler and you get marginally more power and upper end due to better flowing and scavanging design.
if you don't need heat at all, EMW sells "j-pipes" that flow just like or better than the 72-74 HX, and people seem to like the company so I have a feeling they are quality parts.

Yeah, what he said. The fuel injection is so simple it's eerie. There's one temperature sensor on the head, that's it. I pieced together and adapted the same system to fit on my T1 bus for about $200 minus the manifolds. I got away from carbs a long time ago. Take a look in the fuel injection forum in here.
