It would help if you would tell us what you are working on.

You will get greasy as H***

Assuming you are working on an ACVW, just about any place that sells VW parts.

411 and 181s (VW thing) use the same CV joint. Also porsche 924/944 use the same CV. For just boots you can try this:
http://www.germansupply.com/home/custom ... at=&page=1

best boot money can buy right now. a lot of the ones on the market will have you replacing it again in under a year. adn these aren't even that pricey!
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Yes...except for the fact that you NEVER lock your shafts in a vice like that. The way these shafts are made and hardened...and there are numerous texts that note this...any hard scratches or dents in the shaft can cause fracture areas under load. Bead blasting and shot peening should also be avoided. Other than that....it was pretty good! Ray

do the CVs just drop straight down after i unbolt them
(meaning i dont have to dismantle any of the rear to do this?

also the book says special key?
is it a star key(torque key)
they say you can use an alen key but id rather use what im supposded to

Hey...sharkskinman.....you are mainly just getting this thing rolling right? Are you actually going to drive it? If you are not going to be driving anywhere actually...just leave it until you get time. DO NOT use the speedy boot. Those suuuuuuuuck!

The way the 411/412 work is that you need to jack the wheel up off the ground....trust me...do it!. Block the wheels and put it in neutral.
get an 8mm triple square socket ....not an allen key. A3-4" extension bar and a 3/8" ratchet will do fine.

With the wheel off the ground....working on the wheel end of the shaft.....looking at the CV joint bolts, put the socket bit into the one closest to between 5:00 and 7:00 o'clock position. Hold the wheel and turn the ratchet or vica-versa. Just crack it loose. Turn the wheel and repeat for all. You can take 3 of these out right now but leave three in but loose.
Go to the transmission side. Use your ratchet on bolts between the 11:00 and 1:00 position. Turn the wheel to expose new ones. You can remove them all. Get a 1 gallon plastic bag to cover the inner end while you remove the last three bolts from the outside joint.

Oh...and I have no issues with posting 411/412 question on the type 4rum......it is THE TYPE 4  ....the rest are all poser vehicles with stolen engines.......but you might get more answers posting on the 411/412 forum. Ray

While I was watching the video it showed the installation of the bevel washer before the cv joint on the shaft. The last time I replaced my boots I don't remember the bevel washer being there. Is the missing bevel washer an issue? If it is, where do I get one?

see
hm?

the 411/412 one says
The 411/412 Forum.

Discuss with fans and owners of the most luxurious aircooled sedan/wagon that VW ever made, the VW 411/412. Official forum of Tom's Type 4 Corner.

and the 4rum says
The Type 4rum

The official forum of Type 4: Secrets Revealed. This is the place to discuss, or get help with any of your Type 4 questions.

so which one is for which?

or should i just post in the catagory of the problem
like transmission section
or electric section?

type 4s are something different
and ill post them on both if it takes that to get an answer...

Yes just getting it on the road
I dont even have brakes yet (altho the master cylinder and the rubber inside it Look Immaculate)

and thanxx to all
the answers so far to my questions have been answered :D

and Ray your saying in the parking lot i can take it out while it sits there
as if it should just drop from the tranny first?
ive done front wheel drive CVs before but some are quite differnt

Most of us will answer it in both locations. But....the vast majority of people on this forum....do not care about type 4 cars....just type 4 engines in other vehicles.
I consider them all thieves (but friendly thieves).....stealing engines from our viable 411's and 412's.... Ray

hey what about us late bay guys, heck we even got our own fuel injection!

anyways the bevel washer is left out by most, as it makes installing the c-clip much more difficult later. Ithink VW even decideded it didn't really help anything so there may have been a bulliten saying it could be left off. I don't know if that is accurate tho.

'74 412 had L-jet a year before the buses did.

The Type 4rum is pretty much an engine forum, while the 411/412 forum is covers the T4 cars in general.

wildthings is right, the Type4rum is specifically for the Type 4 engine, whereas the 411/412 is for the car. There is some overlap, so if you own a 411/412, both forums are useful. Make sense? 8) -- Tuna
