I put it on the lid before installing the lid. Put the loop into the notch on the body, then slide the lid into place - you have to fight the spring tension initially, but as the lid goes home the resistance goes away so you can align the hinge-bolt holes easily. Best to have a helper to hold the hinges up from below while you push the lid into place.

Re: deck lid spring
I found it easier to attach it to the decklid first, then position the lid to partially attach one side of the hinges while putting the spring into the slot. Then slide the other side of the decklid into position, so you attach the other side hinge.
If you have the decklid removed from the car, Re-attach the brackets, there should be three bolts on either bracket to the car. Do this without the deck lid attached to the brackets. Then there are two bolts on either side of the decklid that attach to the hinges. Put one bolt on one side of the deck lid in and bolt it to the hinge. Install the spring attaching it to the body then deck lid. At this point the decklid will have a pivot point to compress the spring into place and allow you to bolt up the other side of the decklid to the bracket. Once it is in place you can put in the other two remaining bolts and align the decklid.
Any questions? let me know how it works. If you have problems you can pm me and I will give you my number so that I can walk you through it.

Re: deck lid spring
thanks. I did just that. attached 1 bolt, put spring into it's slot and pushed the other side over so I could install another bolt. then after installing the last 2 bolts I checked fitment and came really close. I'm happy. Thanks again.
