fired a new starter
Fired a brand new starter. The wire between the silond and starter motor was fired. Any Ideals what caused this. Would adding a realy help out?

The large wire from solenoid to motor carries the current for the motor (if it fried, the solenoid is apparently working so a relay would be of no benefit.
Apparently there's an internal short in the motor. You didn't try to "bench test" it by applying power with the starter not bolted into a transaxle, did you?

I sure didnt. I have to pick up a new starter this weekend. So how do i do a bench test of the starter

It was a reman starter maybe i just got a bad one

DON'T apply power to a VW starter (other than the AutoStick style) unless it's bolted into a trans or a jig with a good bushing to support/center the pinion shaft. That can damage it.
It's good practice to always install a new bushing along with a new/rebuilt starter (in fact, Bosch requires it before they'll warranty their starters, which all come with a new bushing).
12V starters have a smaller-diameter pinion shaft than 6V, so if the transmission was originally in a 6V car you must use a special thicker-walled conversion bushing when intalling a 12V starter.
