Faulty regulator

Today, I installed a voltmeter and upon starting the car I noticed that the voltage shot-up to 17 volt and more than 18 volt (or even more as it went to the end of the scale). I replaced the regulator with an original one (under the rear seat) it cost me $20 and the charging is in order now.

I wonder what will happen if the problem was not detected early, will it fry the battery or blow/shorten the life-span of all bulbs?
