SCAT'S Split Ports With New Rocker Box Design

I almost went down that impassible road many moons ago, thank goodness I moved.

I'm still curious if Paul ever got past the computer design stage on his T4 heads...

"improved stock" heads discussed with additional meat cast in the right places (esp deck, ex port possibly redesigned) would be better for most apps IMHO.

I am curious as to what exactly you are saying ?

I myself would like a set of the new Split Ports, the new rocker box design has taken care of the leak issue's. And the heads have always flowed big numbers. Then theirs the other advantages they provide.

I believe they are around $2200 ready to bolt on, so their not exactly cheap, and as to why I haven't ran out and got a set yet.

Another issue is an exh system, for a bug they wouldn't be that bad, a Type 1 exh could be adapted to the heads with some modifications, in my case a whole new system would have to be fabricated to fit the heads in a 914.

A set was just completed not to long ago with 50 x 40 valves and was where I remembered the price from. The previous design had the rocker shafts going thru the rocker box and the shafts were sealed by O-rings between the shat & box, well they didn't seal all that well and was prone to leaking, and was a major complaint.

Some have said they don't cool well on the street, others say they cool fine on the street, one guy in Europe that is running the old style to this day and is happy with them other than the oil leaks but he runs a 911 fan setup.

The cooling issue has also been said about Pauter heads on the street, but Don has ran them on the street for some time with out heating issue's.

Split Port benefits: They flow very well and can make big power even in stock form, they torque down individually which is a more consistent torque method compared to cross torquing a head over 2 cyl's, and the cyl studs are equal length, which allow for equal expansion rates between the studs, that allow for equal torque levels even after expansion due engine temps.

That new rocker shaft design is elegant compared to the original design.
$2200 is cheap for a head you can order and recieve in a quick timely fashion. Look at how many people have had cash in had for the E+ and Rem. heads. I was ready to buy Performance Technologies T1 style T4 head in 2000 but they weren't available "yet".

You are stuck with the ratio of the rocker arm that Scat supplies. That is one draw back, no ratio rockers.

Actually they come with 1.4 to 1 rockers, and I believe are included in the price.

I was looking at them many moons ago... old style, and simply figuring out what was actually required at the time was a PITA. I recall getting the required hybrid PR tubes to work was a challenge, but I gave up before I found out for myself.

IIRC the total cost >10 years ago got run up to ludicrous $$$ by having to buy special 8x$100 rocker arms that were not included and so on.

The final deal killer was (what turned out to be...) the multi year wait for the next run.

If they are actually available, (and at that price, complete...) splitports with E85 and a turbo would probably make a great combination, as the price is definitely right compared to any alternative, including fully worked AMC heads, and SCAT is a reputable as they come AFAIK.

OTOH the whole rocker box still looks retained with 3 8mm bolts, IIRC that was an issue as well, although you would think that could be dealt with given enough meat for inserts where they screw in, 12.9 bolts and some locktite.

BUT---As I said back in 2004...
"I cannot honestly say I have ever spoken to anyone with any good words about the split ports..."
http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php ... 41&start=0
I still haven't heard it from anyone who has actually run them on the street.

I don't have any pics of the old design, but the new design has 4 bolts, 2 just holding the box and 2 more holding the shaft and box down and the 3rd rocker shat bolt is just into the box since there is no place underneath.

I looked for the picture I had of the split ports in a car, but I think Walter knows of him or maybe even knows him, And he may have been the one who posted the picture ?

There is one guy here who runs a 2366cc with the Split-Ports in a convertible. The engine was professionally build by a shop and had a 11-blade fan cooling, still after some highway driving a valve seat dropped...
I cannot think of any other reason then that the engine got too hot due to insufficient cooling.

IMO numerous tall cooling fins on the top surface of the exhaust ports would be a huge improvement with regard to drawing heat out of these heads

I fully agree, that part of the port if it could be cooled would help drop head temps considerably and had thought about something like these would be an idea the first time I saw Split Ports: Heat Sink

They also have 5 instead of 6 fins like the already crappy cooling superflo and comp eliminator heads (stock T1 8 fins).

I did probably 7 to 8000 kilometers on the street in and around Modena and both during summer and winter.
No cooling problem but rocker shaft oil leaks, YES.

Then I moved to Poland and did some changes with the DTA injection, new honed cylinders and new rings, now the car would more or less not run. I had serious problems of running well and overheating but it was for sure not linked to the cylinder heads suddenly not working.
As an afterthought lonmg time later, I think it was linked to the new piston ring setup.
I got the car running quite good again some years later in Sweden but this time I went overkill in my engineering and ran a turbo AND a Autorotor in series.
Heavenly sound and good response but I melted a piston trying it out by tuning on the streets on 25 psi....narrow band lambda....what the hell. I did learn something even if the fun was shortlasting.

Here is a mix of some setups I have had in the car and most of them with the Scat heads.

This is the only picture of the car with both turbo and SC. It only lasted few weeks before a lot of oil smoke alerted me of a serious issue.
The turbo is in the lefthand fender sucking air through from the outside and then blowing in to the inlet of the SC through a huge intercooler with two fans above the automatic gearbox.

OK, these guys are selling the basic T4 kit 50X40 valves, seats and guides installed for $1195.
http://www.evwparts.com/Merchant2/merch ... 4SplitPort

The pics are old style, but evwparts says the heads will drop ship direct from SCAT.

They don't sell the rockers...?
Autocraft may have compatible higher ratio bushed rockers and or rollers in the .707" shaft size, probably worth investigating for street use.

Add $140 for the manifolds, ~$200 for valves (you can easily beat that) and $94 for a set of .707 1.25 rockers (the 1.4s are .6" and needle bearing only) and pick up a set of the oring sealed PR tubes (IIRC) and you should have something that's close to working for ~$1500.

I'd still run E85 or water jacket the things. Or both.

NOTE: Guides are installed only if heads are ordered ported & polished
Did you see the note ? And I saw no price for Porting Or Polishing,

There is no mention of the heads being newly designed, or new pictures reflecting the changes as you mentioned.

Their is no mention that their are no Type lV manifolds, that 2 sets of the Type 1 manifolds have to be cut up to make one set to fit Type lV heads since Type lV cyl spacing is different, and 2 sets of ported Type 1 manifolds are $300..

And I don't think that kit pricing is current anyways. But lets say it is, $1200 for the heads with seats, lets say $300 for porting and guides installed, then another $300 for 2 sets of ported Type 1 manifolds, how about $150 for valves, $200 for rockers, and were at $2150.

I quoted around $2200 for heads to bolt up cause thats the price, and I am not even sure that includes manifolds or not. So I apparently know something of the heads, The pictures that I provided are of the very first pair made back in 2008. I have tried to get a set for free, but doesn't look like that will happen...

I also have thought about water jacketing them, especially for Turboing.

Richard, there's this thing called email... I asked them.
The 50x40s have the guides installed, this implies some level of porting.

Didn't realize the T4 manifolds were "custom", For that price, I'd bolt TBs to the ports.
New style, we ship from the factory.

I'd like to confirm price, and are these available?

Also, are these the old style (as pictured, with the rocker shaft going
through a hole) or the new revised style (that doesn't leak)?

Thank you.
