Post by stanthedog »

Driving home last night I had the heater on, A few blocks from home I turned the fan off and the headlights went out and the engine quit, then came back on. I got home then the headlights dropped down, still on. So i shut them off. tried the heater fan again, nothing, tried the headlights, stayed down but all lights came on. all fuses are ok.
any idea's.

Check the main ground strap at the nose cone.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

When funky things happen in an electrical system, it's almost always a grounding issue. Electricity is "lazy" and will take the path of least resistance. That makes it feed backwards through other components if the normal grounds are poor.

Example---

Had a 76 VW Golf with intermittent charging issues... Alternator checked fine, battery good, cables good.
Engin/trans ground strap LOOKED like new and ohmed out, nuts tight, no visible corrosion..

One day the speedo stopped working (needle went to around to the other side of the stop), which seemed unrelated.
(Std Tesla type spinning magnet speedo)
Blew the little spring out for the speedometer needle like a fuse. (metal speedo cable goes to trans...)

The ground strap disintegrated when removed and was flexed a few times.

All problems solved on replacement.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
