Hi
i have got myself a -71 914-4 and is in the planning of restoring it to a circle track car
some of my plan is to replae the 901 tranny to a beefier one.
has considere a coupleof alternatives
Can i flip the diff in a G50 early 5 speed ?
and does anyone know if the boxter tranny bolts up to a type 4 engine?
thx

But you can flip the
whole G50...
(and many other transmissions than might be as or more beefy vs. a G50 and not cost a kidney)
IIRC there's a beefy Renault transaxle that can have the ring gear flipped, bit low geared but cheap and very strong.
If it's a short tracker, might be an option/feature.

Brad Roberts (Ex-914club.com owner) was developing a Boxster to VW adapter plate setup for upgrading 914s with T4s or /6 motors, used a hydraulic clutch setup. Would have worked with Boxter 5/speeds or some Audi transmissions.
AFAIK he only made one or two, not sure if it went into proper production, I kinda lost track when he stopped posting on 914club.com.

Man, you can get 2 or 3 of the Boxster 6 speeds for that...

If you aren't looking at really stupid HP an Audi 5000 manual or automatic would probably get it done reliably, the auto can probably take more abuse, LSDs are still available for both, and the auto shifter setup is dead simple.
FWD Subaru transmissions are also viable, moreso if putting in Subaru power...

Why not just put a Subaru 5 speed AWD transmission converted to 2WD?
They are light, strong, affordable, modern 5 speeds that fit in there like a glove.
We make the 2WD conversion spools and 2WD end plates if you don't want to fab your own.
Also about to release a VW/Porsche engine to Subaru trans adaptor plate and matched lightweight flywheel. This way you can use the nice big Subaru clutch and powerful starter motor.

What is that setup (complete) expected to cost ??? (ballpark is OK)
I'd be more inclined to drop an EZ3.0/6 in it at that point.
OTOH one could practically score an early Boxster with a trashed motor and convert THAT to the EZ3.0 by the time we spend too much.

You should be able to pick up a good late Model STi transmission for $1000.
$200 for the subaflange 2WD locking sleeve, $200 for the 2WD blanking plate, $500 for the flanges to adapt from Subaru to VW/Porsche cv's and axles (or you could just run Subie cv's and axles).
Final costings aren't finished yet but looks likely to be $500 for adaptor plate and $250 for matched flywheel.
So total say, $2650 if you don't do any DIY and buy all the parts.

That is the most cost effective transmission I ever heard of for this application.
Beats the hell out paying a pro to rebuild a 901 or a 915.
And the Suby tranny is VERY abundant in SoCal.
HHHmmmm. Makes for a easy choice IMHO.

How well do the Subi auto trans hold up to BIG turbo horsepower?
