But only if the DF wire is connected to the REG. With it connected it charges.

I figured it out. I had the coil power circuit tied into the power for the Gen, Oil, Dome light and it was feeding power back thru the coil power circuit.

Really.... Ummm.... That is how most systems are wired if you look at any VW schematic....

With alternator systems we call it "run on" and use a diode in D+ lead to stop situation...

Should not happen in Generator system as there should not be "feed back"on terminal 61 (GEN lamp) of regulator...

I think it is because of the Porsche steering column and the GM wiring conversion.
