Air conditioner on a Type 34 Ghia

Post by Ravivos »

Hi All,
I live in a rather warm (and painfully humid) area of the world,
As i am planning to rebuild my T3 engine and restore the Ghia to its (almost) original condition, i was wondering if it is possible to mount an air-conditioner in it.
If it can, Please share some pictures and ideas on how to mount the compressor, where to mount the radiator and how to run the plumbing...

Thanks,
Ravivos.

My Type 34 used to have A/C but it was removed before I bought the car. I have seen the condenser mounted under the air intake grille in the rear trunk. My concern with that is that you are essentially heating up the cooling air for the motor. I assume the condenser goes under the dash on the passenger side. The previous owner cut holes in the firewall presumably for the refrigerant lines. I have seen these lines run under the car on the passenger side and then coming up in the right wheel well. The fan housing has 2 holes about 1.4" in it for the fan belt for the compressor. Unfortunately the previous owner also cut the right side of the engine compartment to presumable mount the compressor. I hope this might be some use.

I have air conditioning in all of my cars! It functions best when you drive over 60mph... quarter windows!

If you can't run from John Law with it... It ain't no good!

Sorry for the late reply,
Yellow73, that does help and it is exactly what i was thinking about, in order to mount an additional compressor, i need to have a proper mounting frame, for the radiator/condenser, i was thinking of placing it where the spare tire goes, but i will need to run the pressure lines throughout the entire length of the car.
furthermore, for proper heat dissipation, i will probably need an additional vent to blow air over the radiator, which means i need to replace the dynamo with an alternator (a welcome upgrade).

builtbychevy - well... thought about it but our temps gets really high during the summer (8 months of it), up to 38 deg Celsius with 98 percent humidity... that can actually drives one even crazier than he already is :-)

well, more than a year has past by and i can finally find time and space to work on my Ghia.
been working like a possessed man for the last month
as for the air conditioner, just got back from a store with loads of parts and planning on building the air condition system in the following days.
all parts are new - bought an internal unit with the blower, cooler, expansion valve and controls all-in-one, a small compressor, a condenser with a 270mm fan, a dryer, fittings and hoses...
it sure is going to be an interesting project, if you're interested - would post pics and some test of it.
