RIP WBX
The end of my good going 2,1 160hp wbx on SPA Circuit 2013 at 7000rmp.
My friend Jürgen an i build it from a 100000km engine in 2006.
6000km digital driving up to 7500rmps on race and hillclimbing.
Jürgen desinged the cam by himself, its a 328 Degrees with 12,8mm lift.Fedded thru 48 idfs with extensiv welded mainfolds.
The rods are orginals rebuild, loss weigth,shot-peened and well-balanced.
Heads are ported by him,the Valves are stock,but flow-through turns.Exhausted is a A1 <perfomance.
The whole story from my 1302 superbeetle:

on the race:

speakers on:-)
the future will bring more ccm an hps.
enjoy it,
cheers from good old germany

Re: RIP WBX
Now i am scared. I have a 2.1ltr i want to build with rebuilt stock rods. I guess i will do some more thinking on that.
Hmm! 160 HP from a 2.1ltr nice. Were you using stock pistons.

Re: RIP WBX
Sorry,the rods live
the Valves too,ok the outlet is a little bit out of the middle
one lifter is cracked
Yes,standard pistons and standard oil pick up,but all clearanced.
The piston pin were machined inside conical, the pistons well-balanced,an cut to same deck high.
The piston are change to floating pistoin pins.
We think that one circlip broke an the pin comes out an damage the cylinder.
Then the piston broke in too pices and make a big hole
No extensive wear on the thrust side.
with the old to small exhausted and 009 ign.Now with A1 and 1-2-3 Ign.
Sorry for my bad language

Re: RIP WBX
Ahh
Yes the stock rods are really strong . I have used them in all my builds (except one engine) with turbo and 7000+ rpm.
Just replace the rodbolts and check for out of round.
Most likely it is crankflex because high RPM so the pins work side to side.
Seen it on the engines that has been frequent into 7000 RPM mark.
Had to use Dremel to get the pins out!
Maybe a DPR crank with the bigger type 4 center can minimise flexing

Re: RIP WBX
Tuner did you re-use the original rod bolts or did you change them to t1 or t4 rod bolts.

Fastback will your 84mm stroke waterboxer use a t4 centre main crank. If so is that bmw conversion bearing a direct drop in.fastback wrote: Maybe a DPR crank with the bigger type 4 center can minimise flexing

No,we use new wbx rod bolts in 2006.Passatman wrote:Tuner did you re-use the original rod bolts or did you change them to t1 or t4 rod bolts.
But one engine befor this happens:
i heard from several engines with broken rods on the 3rd Zylinder.
Must be a common problem on wbxer
Often the lubrications is broken down.
The next engine is in work
Will takes time and much more money.
More ccm and bigger valves,ev. chanching the cam to one more aggressiv.
Jürgen desinged a new one
Transporting the red tomato to race:
having fun with Jürgen 911 and turner typ3 in the dolomites this year
see you
