Type3/Type4 rotors

Can anyone confirm for me whether or not late type 3 and/or type 4 rotors fit directly only a typical Ghia spindle? If the bearing size and spacing does, indeed work, how well do they line up with the calipers?

Also, does anyone know a source for type 3/type 4 rotors that are either undrilled or drilled for 5 on 130?

EARLY (pre'73) 411 brake calipers & pads are the same as LATE (late`71-`73) Type III; `73-up Type IV are bigger still...so none of the calipers will bolt up to 'Ghia spindles.
The 411 407 075 rotors accept the same wheel bearings and seals as the Type I and early Type III, but the offset is different - so while they can be fit to Type I spindles, they won't be centered in the calipers. There'd be no advantage I can think of to using them since the diameter's no different, it'd only be worth messing with if you had some laying around or if you're using oddball calipers for which you're making your own brackets anyway.
At least that's the way I remember it - last time I played with that stuff was ~1985.

You asked about 'Ghia spindles yet apparently have a Super Beetle - in Europe Supers came with disc brakes, which I believe had similarities to the early 411 - although I've never had a set apart to compare. I too wonder what it is that you are up to.

My son's in the process of fitting `66-`71 Type III calipers and some 'Ghia rotors which had been drilled/studded for 5x130 to a `74 Super, using aftermarket stamped-steel caliper brackets. Looks like it should work OK,

I will make it all clear soon. I actually found in my Hale book shortly after making my original post, the rotors would mount to the spindle, but I did need to know about centering.

True; the Type I/III are 9½mm thick new while the IV are 11mm. Wear limit on either is 1.5mm less. I don't have any IV rotors around to measure, but one could compare the backspace dimension (from inner wheel bearing seat to inside of friction surface); after allowing for the thickness difference that should tell you the difference in offset.

What is the availability of these Type 4 rotors anyway?

Same ones were used on late`71-`73 Type III and 914 Porsches (they went to a hubcentric version in `73 that has the same dimensions) so they aren't hard to come by....$70-$80 each new.
