Type 3 fan help

I'm test fitting the tin etc on my rebuilt engine for my -73 fastback (also up for a rebuilt after 25 yrs rest in the garage) Man is this a puzzle I'm about to fit the fan, but I can't remember how it was attached. I have the fan, fan/pulley, shims and the bolt with the wavy washer, but there must be more to it? Anyone? I've search all over the net, but can't find any pictures or exploded view.

As for the engine, balanced crank/flyweheel/kep2 pressure plate, 1641cc, CB2239, Lobe a lob sums up the internal in a std dual relif case. Hoping its going to be a nice cruiser.

I've attached a few pix of the fan etc, also the full flow set up, done the easy, but minf you tricky way. Don't know how many times I test fitted the shroud for clearance to the AN fittings.

That's not a Type III fan. The fan (& shims) pictured are for a Type I engine.

The Type III fan incorporates the Woodruff keyway and "seal" grooves found on the crank pulley of a Type I engine:




I prefer to install a couple of m6x1.0 studs to attach the cast shroud, using shakeproof nuts over flatwashers - it's a real PITA if those bolts ever back out. Another thing that works pretty well is to smup RTV into the depressions around/over the bolt heads (or nuts).
It's a good idea to use the center out of a junk pulley to center the shroud as you bolt it on, but if you're careful you can eyeball it. The bolt gets much more torque than called for on a Type I (even though the crank/threads are identical)...13 to 15 mkg (94-108 lb-ft). Besides the single notched steel shim ring, there's a paper gasket that goes between the fan & pulley - I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if you don't have one. There was also a plastic cap that popped into the center of the pulley over the bolt...again, not critical to have.

Looks OK on this side (just a little surface rust on the hub that needs cleaning). Examine around the rivet heads on the other side, is there any rust-trailing (orange powder)?

Rust trails indicate that the fan has been working back & forth against the hub (may indicate a balance issue). Inspect every fin closely, looking for any evidence of a shucked balance weight or looseness...straighten out any damage with pliers. These fans are starting to get hard to find in primo condition, hopefully yours is a good'un.
