EGR Plugs

Here's my first foray into plugging the EGR holes found in late heads;
Got the aluminum plug kit they sell at EMW.


Does anyone have the skinny on these for me?
Tricks/tips?

Do you just start the tap from the fin side (It's square to the hole there),
And thread all the way thru to the ports?
Then you screw them on from the port side, until they bottom,
and then smooth them flush with the port with a die-grinder,
Right?

Use any lock-tite, or..?

It says drill to 7/16,
But tap drill size for 7/16-20 is 25/64..

If you know the deal with these,
Please help a brother out.
I'm skeered to mess these here heads up!

I have not used that kit, but JB Weld is rated for 600F.
Locktite is done at "normal" ACVW CHTs long before that.

Last time I needed to plug egr ports I used lamp tubing from a hardware store, ~same thread as factory.
(used to hold sections of a lamp together and run the wire through)

Purely guesswork looking at the parts from here:
If they are the same thread as the std egr port I would think the "same size" drill is meant to be used as a counterbore, and the plug should go in from the manifold side, with the counterbore setting the depth.

It also makes more sense as the plug could never go deeper even if it loosened up.

I'd call EMW.

It looks like you would install from the outside in. Use the drill to counterbore for the shaft above the threaded area. The thread pitch looks similar to what was used stock.

If you install from the inside and it lets loose, think of the carnage.

Just talked to them..

They go in from the outside - in towards the port.

Sometimes they tack them in with a blob of weld,
but usually just held by locktite..

They said the heat involved there, and the plugs being aluminum, that they just kind of 'seize' in place,
And don't come loose.

The threaded area is supposed to be long enough to reach clear in from the outside.
You then smooth the end flush inside at the port.

We'll do a little how-to and show it as it goes it hopefully soon..
