I picked up a used but practically new engine a while back which I am rebuilding (hopefully early next year) to go into a Germanlook 1302S.
The aim of the car is to fit somewhere between a daily driver and a weekend warrior but remain easy and smooth to drive.
I've already got Kerscher shocks on it, with 280mm VR6 disc brakes all around. I've added a lot of sound deadening to keep the car quiet.
FWIW, my other bug is a 195hp 2332 street car, now I am looking for something a bit more relaxed and quieter that I can do distance in if I want to.

the main parts for the T4 is as follows
78mm DPR crank
early (first gen?) LE180 heads, 42x38
102mm QSC
JE forged piston with 16cc inverted dome. I'll be cutting this down to increase CR or if needed, I'll get flat tops. I'd like to avoid cutting the heads so I can keep them as strong as possible.
1.3 rocker arms
44Idfs
aly pushrods (AC.net)
Street beehives from AC.net
A1 muffler 1/5/8 sidewinder, stainless.

Now for the cam?? With the parts, I got a EMW "H" grind with straight cuts. I've already backed off to helical gears as I hate the sound of straights.
My gut keeps pushing me towards the Webcam 86A camshaft.

My aim is big torque (which I'm sure either cam will give) with a peak hp in the 160hp range, somewhere between 5000 and 5500rpm, while being relatively quite as far as mechanical noise goes.

What are your thoughts when comparing the EMW H grind to the Web 86A on a 2550cc build?

The web 86b/c in my 2256cc t4 (914) got me 158hp/158 ft lbs of torque, that should at least give you one reference point.

For my 2056 I chose a Web 163/86B. I really like the idea of split duration. I also have the car as daily driver and I aimed for lot of torque down low. But I don't have the engine in car yet so I can not give a feedback on how it drives. On your big engine it shall perform even better. 494 would have given more torque at lower rpm, but it has a more aggressive grind... I wanted to have the engine reliable and long lasting.

X2 on a dual-pattern cam.
The last couple I built really liked more exhaust breathing.
Exhaust rockers don't lift as much as intakes..

If you want quiet, the first thing would be to dampen intake noise.
Exhaust can only make so much difference if you have a set of open-element cleaners a few feet from your head.

If that were my motor,
i'd be mocking up to see your measured CR.
Can't help but think that much displacement will have some compression even with the piston dishes.
Once you see your CR IRL, then think more about cam..

That much displacement would make even a big cam seem small.

Do you have that exhaust in-hand already?
Seems a 38mm valve might even like a 1 3/4" exhaust..?
A1 sidewinder isn't known for being super quiet.

I'm running a scat C55(close to a 86C) in a 103x78 , bigger valve heads , PAC beehives , 10.4 comp . approx 165 WHP. it's a daily driver full weight Ghia . with the big displacement you have heaps of low torque . just a side note, my standard 215mm Sachs clutch is still holding . I would like to send JPM all my engine details in the future and see what cam he would recommend out of his grinds.

Clatter - I agree about mocking up before buying parts. Thats what I am hoping to do after Christmas (no promises there).
Regarding the exhaust size, I have a A1 sidewinder 1/5/8" on my T1 bug and that is good enough for 195hp, so I really dont need a bigger pipe if I am aiming for less power. And yes, they are not quiet - I'll be having a dual muffler wrap around system made up to try to get the noise down (once the car is running), thats actually the next change for my T1 too.
For induction noise, I've considered a set of those foam filter which fit over the K&N's to help muffle it a bit. On my bus, I'm going to experiment with a pair of CB turbo hats going to a center filter - if that works without upsetting jetting, then I'll consider it for this engine.

Wreck - good to hear about the clutch. I've got a NOS clutch and pressure plate that will be going on.

So the consensus is that the 86A is not enough cam?
Had anyone ever used the EMW H grind?

A friend is also pulling 165whp from a 4.040”x78 , with a 236@ 050 hydraulic dodge grind cam from Tighe’s a local cam company . He has only a 1 5/8 header and has run 44idfs with the CB update and 48 Idfs .
