Upright Bug Conversion - First Timer Questions!

Post by topnotch »

Hi,

Just getting my engine built up to go in our 71 Bug - i bought it as someelses failed project so it had the CSP upright conversion kit with it.

I 've been toying with either the CSP conversion or the Cali conversion and modding a stock fanhousing to accept the T4 oil cooler.

I mocked both up tonight though and the CSP shrouds fit pretty well to be honest and the fan shroud looks quite neat too.

Any opinions on either option are greatly received - i' going to use the CSP shrouds, but not sure whether to use the CSP fan shroud and a remote oil cooler (although who knows where i would put that in a beetle!) - or use a stock fan housing and modify the oil cooler to accept the T4 oil cooler in there.

Heres a couple of pics -

Hello!

If you’re going to run twin carbs you’ll need a 30horse style shroud.

Get a doghouse cooler version and in a bug you can normally get away with a stock t1 cooler. You’ll have to pipe it in though:

Those pics are my cali conversion, that’s in my early bay.
I have more if it helps?

I went type 4 cooler as I have the bus and it was a lot of mucking about to make it all fit, hence I wouldn’t bother in a bug.

Thanks - i see what you mean about the 30hop fan housing - it is a very close fit. No way, i'll get away with the bigger one.

I think i'm going to fit the type 4 cooler into a modified 30 doghouse fan shroud - i have the joe cali book so hopefully that'l help me with mounting it :-)

How did you create the front and rear tin bits - did you modify type 1 pieces?

Cheers

Why not just use the beetle cooler? My understanding is that the blower is the limit for oil cooling (not the size of the cooler). Also top loading the cooler like the DTM seems simplest.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Hiya - it’s just I have a spare Type 4 cooler sitting on my bench that’s all.

If it’s a ball ache to accommodate the Type 4 cooler, I’ll pick up a Type 1 cooler second hand easily enough.

I thought that the type 4 had a bigger cooler fitted as it needed it- but maybe as you say, the upright cooling doesn’t supply as much air to the cooler as the pancake cooling.

I did some work on the repro 30hp shroud by sorting out the area under the stock cooler to keep air in the cooler channel as the repro unit had bits missing.

I fitted the type 4 cooler as it’s bigger and presents a larger surface area for cooling, it is true that the amount of air available is limited by the fan, but I think that what’ll happen is that the air will go through the additional fins although perhaps the air speed may drop due to a larger cavity than a type 1 cooler creates. I’d have to run a trial to see if it makes a lot of difference.

The stock type 4 fan is huge in comparison and the extra cooling must be needed or vw wouldn’t have done it. The heads have masses of fins compared to type 1s so the heads should run cooler.

I made the tin over the bellhousing from a stock type 4 late bay tin and the front tin is modified type 1 with custom made pulley tin.

I’m only using stock type 1 style tin under the barrels and not the type 4 parts - I may fit those as well to cool the exhaust ports.

My bus runs up to 100/110 so far which is ok, but hotter than I’d like on a run so I’ve bought an additional cooler and also thinking of getting a Venturi for the fan entry as I read some chaps have seen a 5-10 degree temp improvement (late bugs had this fitted too).

I am thinking of making spacers to move the carbs out so I can use a stock late fanshroud as the internal vanes will be better.

My cooler is mounted using a modified stock type 1 cooler mount, plugged and tapped for direct exits through the shroud. I was considering changing this to a flat plate type take off for ease of doing up the fittings.

I’m using a conversion flywheel and 200mm stock late bay clutch.

Hope that helps?

I have considered converting back to type 4 cooling as I love stock stuff, but I really don’t wanna butcher the bus - this was built for my 1303 really , that’s still a project though!!!

I also don’t have the thermostat fitted just yet - almost works but I needed the bus running so didn’t finish it off yet.

Even Joe Cali says if he were to do it again, he would run a T1 oil cooler. He told me he was surprised how well the Cali set up cools a T4 and at times struggles with getting the oil to proper temp, and that's with a functional thermostat flaps.

Thanks guys - thats some really helpful pics and advice :-)

I think i'll go with the type 1 cooler then initially as it'll save my messing around modifying the doghouse for a type 4 cooler. I may have a go at fitting that later fanshroud once i get my carb manifolds so i can mock up where everything is sitting and see where the clearance issues lie.

Well, let us know how you get on and I have a library of pics if you need anything. Not just mine either.

I would definitely try the type 1 cooler this time.

Yep - i'm going to go with a Type 1 cooler and have decided to modify a stock doghouse fanhousing :-)

Some tweaking with the angle grinder leaves me with this -

Its taken a bit out of the heater ducts, but not as much as i feared. Just have to weld them back up now!
