To all under deck lid turbo guys

Post by blobug »

You guys that are running your turbo low are you all running any type of scavenge pump? Since the turbo Is so low I would think you would want to pull that oil out or it would smoke, I’m new to turbo I have always ran blowers on my cars and this is my first bug I built so I’m researching so I do it right the first time.
Thanks in advance

You might get an answer here, but suggest you post this in the 'Forced Induction' specialty forum.

Low mounted, no scavenge pump. Haven't seen any issues. I have a 1.5qt deep sump that I drain into. I use a 5/8" line.

I run a CB turbo header and the turbo sits fairly low. I run a 3/4 return line into a Gene Berg 3-1/2 qt sump. I have not had a single issue with this setup; no smoking - nothing. I think if you make sure to have a reasonably sized return line, you shouldn't have any issues. Don't waste your time buying a scavenge pump until you try a gravity drain and it doesn't work.

This is how I handled the problem:

Image

Its hard to see in the pic, but there is a slight decent from the turbo to the oil sump using -10 AN line. I've driven this setup almost 1K miles without any issues.

I know you asked about "Under the deck-lid" and mine is under the rear fender but it shows a low mounted turbo using gravity to drain the oil.

Nick, is what looks to be a tab back by the trans mount supporting that line? The line should (maybe... depending) have a slight down slope for movement to drain into it plus it's need to be supported from flexing. Looks pretty clean though.

Yes, the line is supported and covered in header wrap to protect from header heat. It's hard to tell from the angle of the picture but the turbo sits about 6" higher that the oil sump. I honestly didn't think this was going to work, but it has so far. I stole the idea from a modern Porsche twin-turbo that had its turbos mounted behind the rear wheels. Next order of business is mounting some kind of charger cooler.
