Pedal distance

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Pedal distance

Post by Leatherneck »

I am setting up the pedals and was wondering what distance pedal to pedal you all are using? I am thinking 2” on left and right of brake pedal, not center to center.

Leather, when I set up my pedals I did as a heel and toe setup based on my #10 Brogans (old term for big shoes: in other words, the length and width of the driving shoes. I finally found some indoor track shoes which are narrow and have little to no heel on them for when driving my buggy in order to get more foot room) to set the gas and brake pedals. Kind of like setting the seat distance from the pedals as you have to consider all the waving around of body parts.

If you do a search on "heel and toe" driving (another technique is "heel and ball" which is probably closer to what I do) you will find several different ways of doing it; what I do is set my heel about halfway between the throttle and brake pedal (assuming you are using one of the pedal assys you can buy for a rail) so I can turn my foot slightly to the right to work the gas pedal then, still leaving the heel on the floor, rotate my foot to the left to hit the brake pedal with the ball of my foot.

The throttle pedal should be set slightly lower/in-set than the brake pedal so when you hit the brake the throttle is being hit also... that is assuming that the brakes are properly set and blead  ). Try it a few times with the pedal assy not tied down so it can be moved around a bit; the throttle pedal s/b already located for fore and aft distance and height (if it is a hanging pedal). If the car has a firewall the pedals must not prematurely hit the firewall if at all.

Since I do do a double clutch into first (you are usually using only the clutch and throttle pedals) while still moving, usually near the top of a dune; because of that wild "foot flinging around" that goes on it also needs to be considered as part of the pedal setup also. I learned this technique from driving cars that had straight cut first (or any gear) and non-synchro plus non-synchro other gears too Trans's.

Again, my opinion is worth a whole bunch less than you paid for it.

Thanks Lee, I set it up wearing my run around shop shoes so my others maybe different but had room with pivoting heal to toe.
I also put it all on a 3/8 plate and drilled and tapped it. I used a copy I made on the printer for my template.

Leather, for what its worth, this is how I set the spacing up:

You are running a dual cylinder assy which is different than what I am doing but this is how the throttle was inset on my black buggy build.

This shows the total travel of the throttle pedal as it sits now.

Thank you for the pics Lee. Still thinking about moving gas pedal back some or leaving it.

Ya have to do what is comfortable for you. My setup is based mostly on how I drive , the conditions I drive in and my light flywheel not storing a lot of energy which is why the double clutching into first on a steep long dune so it may not be good for everyone.

I've got about 4" spacing centre-to-centre on mine - which is comfortable for heel and toe for me:

Slightly more on the clutch pedal, maybe 4.5"

On mine the edge of the throttle pedal and the inboard side if the clutch pedal pad are in line but the throttle pedal (which is dictated by where the tube come out of the tunnel is about 3 3/4 (44.45mm) which is kind of a lot but the pedal assy to Napoleons' hat dictated the clutch and brake mount location. The brake and clutch pedal pads are about 3" (76.2mm). Using a VW pan dictated a lot of the closeness were a rail (tube buggy) should have more room. Hanging pedals, which I would have liked to do should be better than what I have or the double brake cylinder setup that Leather has.

Good information Phil, thanks.

Yeah, I did have floor mounted pedals but switched to hung pedals as I much prefer the action and modulation on overhung pedals - you can use your leg muscles instead of rotating your ankle - but even in the rail I had to make a lot of mods to the front to actually get them in there, including a new front cross and higher bonnet to suit.

Also had to fold up an alloy foot rest too to help with support over rough sections which isn't an issue with floor mounts:

Nice looking build.

I looked into hanging pedals but don't have the room to setup them up on my buggy. Not sure if Leather wants to or not.

I wanted to but pedals would of been scraping the floor.
