hi folks, long time viewer on here (used to post years ago but lost all of my info so i started all over).anyways i got a 1.7 CB (engine code) bus engine in a trade.apparently long block was rebuilt,it sat and got moisture in one cylinder and rusted it.i was planning on installing it into my 68 beetle doing the joe cali cooling conversion, maybe dual kadrons, modified heater boxes (want to keep heat in car) and a vintage speed muffler.would it worth to keep it a 1.7 or upgrade to 96mm pistons and make it a 1910?i dont plan on drag racing or anything.just want a nice reliable driver that i can cruise up the big hills here in central va and cruise highway all day long.bug has dropped spindles, disc brakes, bigger sway bar,type3 rear brakes, camber compensator.thanks

I would vote for getting the fab work done and getting it going.
You can do whatever other mods after it runs and goes and you suss it.
That being said, if you have to buy P/C, might as well get the 96s..

Looks like you have plenty of cleanup/measuring work ahead of you..
Once you know what you have, then you can plot your strategy.
Just based on the pics, those P/C look save-able?

also would it be a good idea to "shave" the pistons a little to raise the compression?i plan on a web 73 cam, heater boxes with either turbo thomas header or vintage speed muffler.have not decided on carbs yet

I'd pick a TT WAY before a VST.
A real header with a collector is key.

A wideband will work better with a 4 into one header. Vintage Speed mufflers, don't get along with wideband, from what I have read.

The 73 is a decent cam. Always loved the 1.7 with a nice cam and higher CR in a beetle.
Get a decent header and port Match your heads

Kadons would be fine on this setup if you need to save a few bucks and get a deal on a pair.
As long as you don't go too big on the cam, then they will idle on two cylinders like a Harley.
Last set I did up I had cost almost as much as a set of Empi Weber copies by the time I had them all dialed in.

As said above they will hold fine, but if you’re patient get yourself a pair of Dells or Weber 40s and Match the venturies and jetting.
