Upright or pancake

I currently have a nice upright Cali conversion I made for my early bay. I run twin 40idfs now and I really want to go efi so my thinking is should I stay upright and work around this or put it back to stock type 4 pancake where I can fit stock injection parts (which I have) and a proper air cleaner and box - I want to make the bus very drivable and quiet (that means goodbye turbo muffler)!

I have a couple of sets of l-jet although these are likely for 2.0 litre type 4s - will it work on an 1800?

Should I try and resurrect the old l-jet that’s been sitting around or make a new kit?

Also, will a stock type 4 pancake cool well in an early bay? Smaller rear vents suggest they are sized for type 1s to me.

All thoughts and opinions welcomed....!

I’m thinking it would be some real unsightly hacking to put the stock fan in the early compartment.
IIRC, almost the entire rear apron will have to be cut away.
You’re way ahead already with the upright conversation already done.

You can chop a set of stock FI manifolds to get the injector mounts,
Then go from there..

Yeah I’ve thought about that, I want a single throttle body so I don’t have to muck about with balancing, shame the stock plenum won’t go on the motor.

Going pancake means I can fit the super charger easier, but it may fit upright.

You’re right to the work to fit the stock motor, but I would probably spend thousands of hours fettling so it looked ok...

Anyone got any pics of stock fi on an upright? I assume I could just make something fit and use the sensors and other parts inc ecu. Got a bucket of injectors but who knows how good they are!!

First I am happy to hear you are not having any overheating problems, especially in a bus.

Getting back you wanting to go to FI --- ME TOO!! But keep in mind, Buses are rising in price like crazy. Especially with Guys ripping them apart for Subie Engines. Trying to fit the rear fan in will be a rear tear out.

So you have Carbs vs mutilating a rare car. Any carbs are a P I A. But that is part of the VW Experience.

I do agree on the ripping it out - I do think it can be done without destroying more than the rear valence.

However - if I can go fi on the upright I’ll do that.

The bus runs at about 100c at 65/70. For long 70mph cruises it does creep to 108.

I have the type 4 cooler on the shroud which I’m not convinced of, I also added an extra cooler here:

This uses 500mm hoses and a thermostat sandwich plate.

I’m looking at fitting earz too as I see this works well on other buses.

I’ve followed you for years and this combo I have makes 83hp and 96ftlb torque on a stock 1800 motor. The torque is flat from 2krpm and the bus pulls in all gears very well.
