oil Pick up pipe boss cracked

Post by GARRICK.CLARK1 »

Hi Guys, I ' m rebuilding an 1800 and the oil pick up boss is cracked, Thinking of welding it but its close to the cam journal, has anyone welded this boss and had the cam journal or the follower bore move. My other option is drill and tap deeper and use a longer bolt instead of welding the boss.

There's not a lot left before you come out the other side with that boss I was considering a through bolt with sealing washers but went for another case in the end

Got a similiar case here. I also heard that people repaired it by welding, but because I also had an undamaged case here I picked that one for the build. So yes, I heard that its done, but never seen it.

Maybe you can ask the German specialist about it? (Ahnendorp etc?)

Good luck!

You can also weld feet onto the oil pick that rest on the case bottom to reduce the load on the fixed boss

Guys that is the fist thing I check on T-4 cases. My engine was a crazy deal. I know the guys at Manhattan Porsche and they would always give me leads on parts. Got my first 914 from a South Bronx Indoor garage that was stored for 10years. This was during, it being called Fort Apache.
I needed a machine gun.

Next was a never seen oil or started training engine... Lucky when I got home I decided to split the case and install 2.0 Crank and rods. I went stock 1.7 I would not have seen the boss broken. I don't remember how I fixed it, but damn I like the foots idea and if I ever split a T-4 case will do it, just because it a real weak part.

That was 30 years ago same engine i drive today. The case or heads are original never replaced.
