53 Year old Barnfind,
Hi, I am new to the forum, but not aircooled VW's.
I hail from Ireland, and have had VW's for many years. I have a 73 Fastback
a 72 1200 Beetle. And i recently acquired a 53 year old VW Variant, that has spent
the last 50 years in a shed on the coast of Ireland. A real barnfind. Never started for over 50 years,
and we started it in 2 days.

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind,
Plans are to get all the mechanics in shape.
Then onto the body, which requires far less work than my own 72 fastback.
I made all the replacement panels for the fastback, including heater channels.
The variant only needs the bumper support panels on the rear. Its in fantastic shape.

Amazing.
What would cause a 3 year old car to be stored for 50 years?

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind,
It broke down on a holiday in the UK in 1970.
AA man could not start it, so it was hauled to the boat and pushed onto the ferry.
Drove off in Dublin, but broke down soon after.
Towed all the way to the coast. Local mechanic got it running, but it broke down again.
It was pushed into a shed and left there for 50+ years.
It was pulled out and delivered to me. Myself and my brother had it running sweet 2 days later.

Awesome find!
Djet car?
No one knew what to do with broken efi back when it was new to the world.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind,
Its not efi, its twin 32 PDSIT carbs.
It was a simple enough fix, any vw mechanic worth his salt back then would have easily found
it if he started from the basic tests. It was evident.
But even today in my experience normal bug guys here in Ireland, think working on type 3's is akin
to dabbling in the black arts..............they are scared

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind,
Hmmm. I though trafficking in Type 3's was the same as fraud in 13 states?

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind,
So, it's a '67. My Mom and Dad brought back a '66 after touristing Europe. It had a 1600 SP with twin carbs. Once I talked them out of it it had gone through 3 engines (Mom loved to do 70-75 on the freeway...) and had 179K on the odometer. About that time we learned about the problem with the rear facing vents, and started seeing dealer reversed vents and aftermarket scoops to hopefully allow high speed driving. I had to replace the transaxel soon after I became owner and eventually swapped in a '67 engine, which was a DP 1600, with the same style dual carbs. I let a friend talk me out of it, to my regret.
Just curious as to the engine carb setup it came with.
