Welcome!

Over on "the samba" they have a list of vin numbers corresponding to build dates and a little bit of searching will find "birth certificates" for your VW. Tell them the VIN & they will be able to tell you colors, options etc. Good luck!

An interesting question.

I can understand some of the why's but then I am not sure if it can be really done as you would have to find out who the owners were and get some of the info from them (assuming they are still around). Looking at it from a extreme but silly position... what if the car, being bought in originally in '66, had a new owner every month 'till you bought it. That would be a lot of info to be looked into.

Insurance companies might keep records of any damage done, the state's dept. of licensing might/would have licensing and owner (assuming you could track which if any states the rig was licensed in) info and maybe some of the mechanics might have some more assuming you could track them if you have permission to even be able the ask any of the questions you need. The latter could be very difficult as sometimes parts are not rebuilt but replaced by something from another year.

What kind of specific info are you looking for?

La Jola is a suburb of San Diego CA and there are several collages there (the door sticker) Hmmmm, that's a long way to go to school but... it is often done. There are people who are specialists in some field/trade (AKA "Job Shoppers" for one of the general names they are known by) who travel around the country working at places for short periods of time then moving on but again, 1966 till today is a long time.

I wish I could help more.
