E, Welcome to the forums.
I have exactly the opposite on my 70 KG; the passenger door has the lock on top, the driver's door, by the handle.
So it's not the door itself, it's the internal mechanicals that's been changed.
I think my passenger (your driver)door is correct, as my ignition key only unlocks the passenger door. I haven't taken it apart to investigate yet.

71 door question
I'm trying to fugure out if the drivers side door I currently have on my '71 Ghia is the correct one for it's year. The locking mechanism differs from the passenger side door: drivers side door has the lock at the top of the door and the passenger side has the lock next to the handle on the front panel. Is this correct for a 71 or has there been some creative repair work done in it's past.
I suspect this is incorrent not only because of the differences in locks but because the replacement latch I purchased is one that utilizes a lock on the handle. Can anyone help me identify what year the door might be (in case I want to sell it after I get a correct model door put on my car)?
Thanks in advance.

Swap? I bet we'd both want the doors that lock from top. If I slam my driver's door (handle lock) too hard, the door locks. Not a bad safety feature, but since the key only works on the passenger side, a hassle sometimes.

Digging through an old KGPR catalog I noticed that the parts for the lock pull rod is only marked as being for vehicle years 67-70. I'm leaning towards the idea that I have an incorrect drivers side door.

71 door question
I suspect that the guts of my driver's door got swapped at some point. Both doors have the push/pull button on top, but the driver's side is not connected to anything.
The inside handles look the same but obviously are different.
Ya think if I got the correct guts for my driver's door, I'd need to replace the inside handle too?
Bump
Erik, you know the answer for this?

I have to replace the door panels eventually anyway, so then I'll check it out. And I can probably find an "open only" handle somewhere, if I need one.
Thanks

Also correct, but the push/pull pc is not connected to anything. It's not broken (same length as one that works). The black plastic piece that you push and pull to lock the door is threaded directly on to the linkage that hooks to the latch. So if you are moving it and nothing is happening something is brokin, or pull the black piece up, if it has come apart it will pull the linkage rod up with it.
Seems to be one of each. Are the interior handles the same? are they both open only handles, or open and lock handles, or one of each?
