Back in late October, I asked for advice on replacing the steel brake lines on my KG and I received some very good advice (thanks a lot). Someone asked me to let you know how things went once completed. So here is an update on my project. Over all the project went well and am proud about the job. Some notes:
-I replaced all the brake lines (as was advised).
-For the long, center line going through interior, starting with the back (as someone advised) worked well. It was tricky, but with patience, I got it in.
-I decided to take out the pedal assembly to get a bit of extra room to work with when feeding the line through the front wall (this showed me how much crud there was in that corner; so I cleaned it all out and I will paint it before I re-install the pedal assembly– I might use Por-15).
-I did not have to remove the tranny for the one line going to the passenger rear wheel (my engine was out already so there was sufficient room to work)
-Sometimes I used the tube bender tool (no problem in borrowing such a tool); other times I carefully bent the line with my hands.
I still have to re-install the brake fluid reservoir and the lines going down to the master cylinder (I’m waiting for a warm day so I can do some cosmetic touch up paint inside the trunk while I have these lines out and the gas tank out). So I have not yet put new brake fluid into the system. I haven’t decided whether to look for some kind of pump or to use the old “pumping the brake pedal” method.
Thanks again for your help. It sure made the job much easier. BV

Steel brake lines-- job done
Near St. Catherines, hey. Yes, small world. If you, 70'140, ever come out my way, send me an email and we can arrange to meet (if you can not take your VW, take some pics).
I was in Hamilton this aft and saw someone with a '73 Beetle (good condition) driving in the salt and snow!!
Merry Christmas. BV
