Pull back rag top...

Post by VeeDoubleU »

I want to have one of those rag tops that pull all the way back, installed on my '70 bay window bus. Does anyone have any ideas how much shops charge for this? Or how its done? I heard from a shop here its like $1k or something....

Well you have a couple of options, I'd bet that the $1k price you were quoted was not far off. Here is a website that furnishes do-it-yourself kits specially made for our cars, if you are so inclined and I think the kit it'self is about $600

Or you could go the "proper" route and get a roof section from an old deluxe bus and have it welded in place on your bus, refurbish the sliding components (and replace whatever parts may be missing since you probably pulled this from a pretty shabby bus to start with) + the cost of a new rag. Well you can see where I'm going with this,

IMHO if you are going to customize your bus to this degree you would probably be much cheaper to do the former even if you have somone install it for you, I'm sure the body work alone for that to smooth the old roof section into yours would be about $1k.

Just for the record, I'm not endorsing the company above, only showing an option, I have considered getting one of those kits but haven't done it myself yet

Interestingly enough , these old typ II sunroofs are sitting in rusted out busses all over the place once you leave So.Cal. problem is they're big & bulky to ship and so usually get scrapped along with the rest of the holey body - I have been given a few on my travels but had no way to bring them home with me . cost to install figure $500.00 if your bus isn't overly rusty , plus of course a new canvas and rollers , pretty neat , increases the resale value of your bus whereas the aftermarket rag top kits _always_ reduce the value across the board .
